Parts Review: Treadstone Bar & Plate Intercooler
UPDATE EDIT: Got a chance to street tune the car this weekend. The intercooler performs as it should and seems to cool well. I get full boost at 3,500 rpm and have good throttle response.
Needing a smaller intercooler for my winter turbo project, I wanted to try a bar and plate intercooler. My only requirement other than it needed to be 6” high or shorter, it had to have the inlet/outlet on the bottom. The center ones from Spearco or Precision would not work. I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money. My research led me to Treadstone. Judging from the pictures on their website, they looked like quality pieces and the price was very good. $230 shipped for the 6” from their website. But, being a cheap ***, I went on eBay and found the same one for $208 shipped.
After getting it out of the box and looking it over, there were no surprises, just warm fuzzies . The welds were even and looked good. The end tanks were thick, and the top and bottom of the core was polished to a mirror shine. The mounting block on the end tanks were solid so it made mounting some L brackets very easy.
I do have one minor gripe. They say the outlets are 2 1/2" When I measured them, they are actually 2 5/8”. This made getting the silicone couplers on them kinda difficult, though I was able to force them on. Very minor issue in my opinion.
For the price, this intercooler is hard to beat.
Here are some pics.

Re: (TheKINGPin)
yea they were probably larger because of a lip added so the couplers dont blow off. Looks like a nice piece i've been looking to get a new intercooler too

2 1/2" = inside diameter in most cases. You probably measured the outside diameter.
But looks like a good intercooler. It has great fin density, much better than most Ebay cores.

Looks like a nice cooler indeed
I'm definately going with bar and plate for my next one.
That's a really good deal for the quality of intercooler for sure.

My goals are low at this point. Around 225 WHP. It will definatley leave room to grow.

Re: (yellowturbo)
The core looks very very much like the core in my XSpower (yah yah...) intercooler... wish I had snapped pics looking into it before we modified the endtanks. Heck even the welds look similar (talking size and the wierd flaking/paint material that looks to be on them and bar/plate) 170shipped on mine from SSauto... everyone's favorite company...
I'm quite happy with mine, its good to know there are other deals out there on ICs.

Re: (splitime)
So the precision was too tall? I think it is .75" taller, fits under my bumper with full grille perfectly. I think the fins inside the precision are denser, and the end tank design is also preferable, so IMO for the extra 20 bucks, the precision is worth it. I do like the polished end tanks though, and seriously doubt you'll ever notice the difference in performance unless you are pushing it to the limit.

Yeah, I can probably get a pic of that. How much clearance did you have?

The fins look durable, I haven't tried to bend them, but they seem stiff.

I actually had to put spacers between the resivoir and car to get a little more room and my charge piping coming off the turbo hangs low.

Wow, tons of turbulators... an odd choice for internals on such a long short intercooler, I wonder if the last half is even going to be used. Too bad you couldn't fit a taller IC and get less restriction but I bet it functions well.
