Default Pardon my bandwagon smashing - Profec B's

Three out of four new Profec B's I've touched in the last two months were defective out of the box. I've talked to a couple other people about them recently, and have heard mixed results, yet all I recall hearing around here is that it's the #1 boost controller ever.

Care to participate in a little poll? Thanks.

We installed one that lasted 2 days, bought it from Titans,we sent it back to them, they sent it back to Greddy America,TERRIBLE service, took 3 months to get it back, they tried to say "installer error" ,I said WTF? I build turbo cars for a living and I had to tell the Greddy guy,"How do you mess up a install that is ; 2 wires + & -,and a vacuum line, and a plug for the solenoid",HOW do you mess up this install?? He finally agreed with me and sent it back as a free warranty repair. A couple others have worked fine, but that warranty experience left a BAD taste in my mouth....... Consistent, but if it breaks, you are screwed, every reseller will send you to Greddy America, and they LAG......worse than any SC61.lol

i put one in a friends 2g dsm, awhile back. the thing worked great at first, but later on down the line(over 6 months of use) the controller wasnt working properly(switching between boost levels) it was nice and easy to use though.

i personally have went thru 3 and all of them were great. in fact, i tested 2 that were thought to be broken, but it was just the dip switchs on back. they were all 1st gen btw.

i have 1 in my car, my friend has 1 i sold him and then my other friend has 1 i helped him buy. holds boost and no spikes at all.

I've got the Spec B in my hatch, and it works as advertised. It holds 14 lbs lo and 20 lbs hi every time I stomp it, been on the car for about 6 months now.

I will say initial install was kinda of difficult, as the instructions in Engrish from Greddy were vague at best. Jack set it for me, and I've not touched anything but the hi-lo switch...

sounds like installer error, I've installed about 20 of them out of the box with great results. I can give you some pointers...

That's what a lot of people have been PMing me. I've only seen the spec 2, and a couple Profec A's. Wierd I've never seen the spec 1, I guess.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by si2die4 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">HKS is the best... Hands Down... No question </TD></TR></TABLE>

Only EVC I've touched was very inconsistent.

Let's see - two wires, a vacuum lead, and figuring out what to do with COM, NC, and NO based on pretty pictures. Yes, complex and difficult to achieve. I don't see how I always install them wrong yet they work some of the time...

Sarcasm aside, any pointers you want to give would be appreciated, but frankly when they go bad they either sit there and do nothing, or they block signal to the wastegate and cause spiking when switched on. I can figure out how to tune anything based on simple instructions and hands on feedback - if it does anything when you change settings in the first place.

Witch one was that? And what do you mean by "inconsistent"? That really tells us alot Alot of them get reused by many people and resold on ebay and such (the older ones).
HKS has the best stepping motors man, I want to know why you had problems!

Three out of four bad... sounds like someone had a hangover at the factory
that day
I personally use a 1st gen profec b, with which i have no complaints. My good
friend just installed a 2nd gen profec b, and has had no problems with it either.
Although i have heard a few complaints thrown in the direction of the 2nd gen,
I think its mainly a case of people not understanding it 100%.

The housing on the 1st gen is kinda flaky thouh.. but other than that, they should
have stuck with that design. The profec b was supposed to be a simple no-frills
boost controller, but i think they over did it a bit.

I'll post up pics of it later this afternoon when I get to the shop. It was inconsistent about the boost level it would hold - always over or undershooting by 3-4 psi. Confirmed on a Galant VR4, Merkur XR4ti, and an Impulse RS by two different installers, me being one of them. It was purchased new by the owner of the Galant VR4... has less than 20 hours of installed time on all the vehicles combined.

I've put the Spec1 Profec in 2 cars, never had a problem.

Id have to say though the SpecII looks great, the features can be confusing but I'd be willing to try one

This might help

Did you guys send it back to HKS? It must be a factory defect cause I know that not all of the controllers do that! Some times people set them up wrong and that is why they get similar problems. Not wiring but programming! The controller needs to have the "fuzzy logic" set up buy running the car at its factory boost level first before you can use the controller. Was this done?

I bought my Spec 2 from Titan a while back. The box was opened, but nothing was touched inside. It hasn't been installed yet, but I hope it didn't come from the bad batch. I wanted a Spec 1, but couldn't find one new in black. I wish this was available at the time. I wonder if it's as reliable as the Spec 1?
