painted black intercooler. will it be hotter from the sun in summer?
well i painted my icooler black on one side. i know black absorbs more heat which in winter i dont care but in the hot summer time when its like 100 out i need as lil heat as poss.. so should i flip it around so the chrome side is out or wont the black affect it so much?

im gonna pretend you didnt ask this. but for the sake of arguement, is your intercooler mounted on your roof or on top of the hood of your car?

what kind of paint did you use? if its like bbq paint, that insulates, so heat xfer to ambient air won't be as good; i doubt you'll notice a difference though, unless you really put that paint on thick.

its only black primer about 2 coats.. not that thick.. but black does absorb heat alot more than the lighter colors so i dunno. ill prob just turn it around so the aluminum side is out.

the amount of surface area that the paint hits is about .5% of the whole intercooler. paint doesnt do anything to heat transfer.
as to flipping the intercooler in summer, its the stupidest topic ive seen in ages.

Then why did you paint it black?

it'll only absorb heat if ambient temp is higher than the temp of the intercooler itself. Air temp in your intercooler with always be higher than ambient because its filled with compressed "ambient" air.

I thought that black things got hotter in the sun because of the way black absorbs light waves. So, unless your intercooler is mounted on your roof like a solar panel there's nothing to worry about.
Example: You should feel hotter standing in the sun wearing a black t-shirt versus a white t-shirt, but your girlfriend's crotch won't feel any hotter with back vs. white panties because they're not in the sun. Get it?

Your intercooler isn't exposed to direct sunlight so it wouldn't be an issue any way. In addition the ambient air is constantly moving through the cooler, on it's way to the intake. Even if you mounted the intercooler on top of your car in direct sunlight, intake temps would be the same as the temp of outside air. Incoming air would cool the intercooler MUCH faster than the sun could heat the painted intercooler.

It'll be fine if painting your intercooler black was a real issue then I am sure http://www.airpowersystems.com wouldn't sell black intercooler's. Like purpleh22 said the amount that is exposed is not enough to worry about mine is black also...

black absorbs heat faster, but it also radiates it faster.
and yeah. the air inside the intercooler is going to be hotter than the air outside anyway. don't worry about it.

correct me if im wrong, havent been in a physics class in a while. black doesn't absorb heat.
black heats more only when exposed to light, because it doesnt reflect any light unlike colors or metals.
like someone above said unless your intercooler is on your roof exposed to the sun, it shouldnt heat up anymore than normal.
