ot:timing belt tension
today, put up my head, cams etc. after setting timing, i realised that when at TDC, there is some slack at the top of the belt. tension on the exhaust cam is okay, it is just the top portion I am not sure about. to be sure everything is set correctly, i turned over the crank a couple of times and everythig is lined up. is the slack normal?

Re: ot:timing belt tension (d mafia)
Got this from C-Speed:
Once the new belt is in place, you will need to retension the tensioner pulley. To do so, place the crank bolt back on the crank and turn the crank counterclockwise three teeth and then tighten the tensioner pulley. The timing belt should have about a 1 inch deflection if you press on it in the center along the front of the loop (long side).

Re: ot:timing belt tension (inspyral)
yeah, you should DEFINITELY tighten it... i left my belt on with some slack.. and from then on... my water pump bearing was shot, my idle was higher than usual at warmup... and who knows what kind of power was lost. i had my belts and water pump replaced... belts tightened.. and there was a noticable difference. idle was better... and engine ran quieter and smoother.

Re: ot:timing belt tension (dlplayboy)
Heres a tip: make something that can reach down in the cover and pull up the belt tensioner manualy. This will take up all your slack instead on just letting it go tight when you tighten the bolt. I use a coat hanger.....Mike

Re: ot:timing belt tension (shortyz)
Be weary of tensioning the belt beyond that which is provided by the tensioning spring - I have yet to have a belt slip, but I have had a belt snap at idle. Granted this was with toda C cams, but I did use some wire to pull up on the tensioner while tightening the bolt. Bad idea! Per Mike this may not be a problem with smaller cams, but I have always just used the helm's method of align/loosen tensioner/turn crankshaft to remove slack ~3 teeth (be sure to maintain tension on the crank pulley while tightening the tensioner bolt)/tighten bolt. Zero t-belt issues since!
