One or more cylnder dies on me after warmup???...please help!!!
The car will run fine if it's started cold. Once it warms up a little bit it will totally change. It will all the sudden start misfiring constantly. It sounds like one or more cylnders is misfiring. The fact that it runs okay until it reaches operating temp is what puzzles me. It can still pull hard during warmup.
*Checked the ignition
*Compression is 200 all the way accross
*Fuel pressure is fine
*Injector spray patterns 'look' fine
*Replaced PCV valve
*Replaced fuel filter
*Cleaned air fiter
*New spark plugs
Something noteworthy is that my car wasn't tuned properly. The tuner at the dyno placed the sensor in my muffler which of course is after my cat. Figured he knew what he was doing. So I have been running extremely rich on the low end. I made some adjustments on the AFC and my spark plugs cleaned up a lot. But I probably have lots of carbon buildup throughout.
Also, when this would happen, the car would usually only throw misfire code 73. I moved the injectors over one and the misfire code became 74. So the misfire followed the injector. But 'sometimes' it throws misfire codes in other cylinders as well. Sooo....It sounds like a fuel injector problem. But why would the injector fail only when the car warms up?? Could their be a problem in the injector wiring or would the ECU show that?
Any suggestions would be very helpful even if it's just remotely possible.

Re: One or more cylnder dies on me after warmup???...please help!!! (Chuck Dean)
And if you need to know my setup...
B18C1 - Stock internals
VAFC and 450cc DSM's
Rev Hard 2c Turbo Kit
Boost at 7-8psi
Manual Boost Controller
Stock fuel pump, FPR
MSD box, cap, and coil
3in exhaust all the way back, w/ 3 in carsound cat
Some other things that came to mind... The spark plug in the misfiring cylinder is consistantly lighter than the three others - but no indications of running too lean or detonation.
Because the problem seems to be progressive, you would think that running rich fouled up something. Just too eliminate possibilities, could it possible be that my cat failed/clogged up from carbon deposits? It does rattle around 2kRPM but it could very well just be the heat shield.
Also, the exhaust pulses a lot (consistantly) when it's misfiring. That's probably to be expected but I thought I'd throw it all out there.
Help me out...

the injector could be stuck open, which wouldnt be as obvious when cold becuase the mixture is so rich

I pressurized the fuel lines and no feul squirted or dripped from the injectors. Two of the injectors had a tiny bit of fuel surface out of the nozzle but that probably wasn't significant.

well the wideband is SUPPOST to go in your muffler. are you running a resistor box with those 450's??? what are yout low throttle settings on the afc??

I was told a wideband downstream from the cat does you no good.
I'm running inline resistors. Something to keep in mind...the car ran great for three or for months and pulled good numbers on the dyno (252/180).
I think my throttle settings are at 98%-99%.
My afc setting used to be roughly (off the top of my head..)
1k -16
2k -26
3k -30
4k on -35 to -40
Those were the settings used after the dyno tune. Once a realized how far off that would have to be on the low end, I brought it up to about -28 , -30.
But I think that is irrelevant now. A 'progressive' problem has developed and it would make sense if it was due to running soo rich for so long. The reason why I call it progressive is because it started as just a shitty idle, then it started dying occasionally at stops, and then most recently it would start misfiring like all hell. This behavior has not been as consistant recently. Ever since I cut back those fuel settings it seems like it doesn't do the whole misfiring routine as often.
Also, I am planning on getting a wideband o2 so I can tune myself so don't worry about that.

Play w/ the AFC at idle and see if you can get it to do anything different.

That was mentioned in the first post as something I have recently done to try and fix the problem. That was the first thing I checked.

have you looked at the terminals inside your distributor for signs of arcing and/or oxidation? like are the terminals greenish with a nice coating on them or whitish with a nice coating on them??

Took off the dist. cap today and looked around. (By the way I have a MSD cap and coil) Nothing looked out of the ordinary. If your talking about the terminals on the backside of the cap, they were white. Everything looked fine including the wire conncetions back behind the rotor.
I also checked the ground for the ECU / relay that's located near the thermostat. No problem there.

i had an msd setup with the cap and all also. did you drill small holes for the coil feed wires for the msd box in the distributor cap? I some problems with moisture getting in the cap and corroding the plug terminals inside the cap. You said they looked white. try cleaning them off a little, that white residue is from ionization. make sure you clean the rotor button off too. use a wire brush or a scrub pad to clean them. Um, doubt it will help much though but if ionization was the original problem then it might have ruined your coil so that when the engine warms up (and it does too) it might be breaking down on you which will cause your engine to miss.

No. I have an external coil and an MSD cap. I don't see why I would have to feed any wires through the cap.

Sound's like your msd coil is breaking down when it get's hot.. Check the resistance in the coil and also make sure your wire's are not arcing..

I'll check out the coil. But does anyone know if it could possibly be a fuel related problem?

A stuck open injected is very obvious, no matter what temp the engine is at. You'll get misfire codes, and tons of smoke out the back, and engine runs like ****.

Re: One or more cylnder dies on me after warmup???...please help!!! (MachAF)
I swapped out the MSD coil and dist. cap. No luck. The rotor looked OK. The only ignition component left to test is the MSD SCI. So, I'm starting to doubt ignition problems.
Fuel Problem? Fuel pressure is fine. I want to think it is a fuel related problem because for the most part, the misfire code followed the injector when I moved the injectors over one spot. Why the problems occurrs after 5-10 minutes of driving, I don't know.
The only other thing I could think of was an internal problem. But I tested the compression and leakdown'd it twice and got perfect numbers. ??
I still don't what to do. I'll try swapping in my stock injectors in a couple weeks.
If anyone has any insight let me know.
