Check this out, it helped me out a lot when I had to do my drain line.
EDIT: instead of hose assembly lube I used engine oil. I just filled up a cap full, and I dipped the hose end right into the cap.

Do any of you guys just leave the masking tape on the braided line? I had to cut my line like 4-5 times to get it to the right length, after the 3rd time I just left the tape on cause it made it easier to stick the hose in the outer fitting.

I already went through this and it was a pain. This is the way I did it
I twisted the hose as far as it would go in the fitting. Mind you I dont have a vise. Then I would see how far I got it in hold the fitting upside down with the line in my hand. I beat it on the ground like I was a damn caveman. It pushed the line all the way up. I put some spray on the other fitting end. I just started twisting it in and their you have it.

yes...leaving the masking tape on helps to keep those braids in order. Just one wrap of thing masking tape isn't going to have any adverse effects on performance.
Just leave one wrap of masking tape on, use the oil and just be patient. "Anything will fit with a little more force"

The person at hose store told me not to leave the tape on cause thats how the fitting tightens.

the fitting has teeth on it that basically digs into the hose. Do you honestly think that one (1) wrap around the hose is going to prevent metal teeth from biteing* into the SS line?

The larger the dash size of the line, the easier it should be to get the socket over the hose. I always have a harder time socketing the feed line than the return line. I can almost always do the -10AN hose on the first try.
First, you have to have a decently clean cut otherwise you'll be fighting the outer steel braid and stabbing yourself all day.
I usually leave just a layer of electrical tape (3M super 33+) on the end with a tassle hanging off so I can pull it off after I've got the socket on the hose. I start diagonally and push in the opposite side with a slight twist as needed, working in any stray strands of steel braid as I go.

another thing i have found to work great, is after you get the stainless line into the red couplink, the outer casing, i sometimes use a 3/8th socket extention to streach the hose out in the couplink, then i can just slide the blue internal male end into the hose, and tighten it up.

Seriously. The frayed metal where the line is cut is like a million needles.

i left the tape on , no problems, i think i may be getting a small leak from where the return meets the tap on the oil pan , should i just throw some t tape on there?
and bye the way a used "t tape" because i dont know how to spell tephlone, or however the hell you spell it

Don't use masking or strapping tape. A layer of electrical tape is usually enough. Don't use a lot of layers. The thicker the layer of tape you use, the harder it gets to insert the hose.

I think Muckman is referring to taping up the nice looking anodized fittings so that during the destructive process of creating your oil lines the fittings dont get damaged. yes? no?

i think the only way to not really scratch them is to use the anodized wrenches that are made for the fittings..they seem to work ok for me..

I use a bench clamp with a liner and an adjustable wrench. I've pretty much consigned myself to never being able to get it absolutely perfect...maybe a pair of faces end up with a little of the anodizing rubbed off, but it's never an eyesore.
I never use my aluminum AN wrenches for assembling the hose ends. They don't provide enough leverage because anything smaller than the -16AN wrench is too short. I prefer not to put them through any strenuous activity anyways because if they get widened out, then they'll be more likely to scratch up or even round off the flare socket edges.
