old watercooled 6262 for $700 worth it or save for a new one?
got a buddy that has an old precision oil/watercooled 6262 that he's selling for $800. t3, .82 ar. it's rebuilt too supposedly. pretty sure I could get it for 700 off him, but was wondering if it's even worth it or should I save up and get an new one? are the wheels the same or are the new one's more efficient? or are the old ones more reliable? thanks for the help guys

The new ones use a different design for the compressor and turbine wheels. it's definitely more efficient.
what are you trying to use it on/for? if you arent trying to make at least 600hp it's too much turbo.

well i cracked a sleeve (a BIG crack) on my 81mm gsr block about 3 weeks ago and decided that i'd go for it on this next build and do it bigger and better. its pretty much a dedicated drag car now. i plan to get a new block sent out and sleeved for 84mm. my dinky *** china POS turbo, thats lasted suprisingly 3yrs, i'm ready to get rid of as well as my shitty log manifold and get a name brand quality turbo and manifold. my goal is really just to be consistently touching the 10's nothing crazy. he had it and i thought why not if i got it for a good deal, but sounds like it would be overkill. what size would you recommend?

Well you have to remember, people are making almost 800hp on the old 6262. If you don't plan on making at least 600 I would say it's too big. especially since you'll have a fair amount of lag at lower power levels than a turbo properly sized for the power you want.
the 6262 will work for 500hp or so but it will be laggy like i said. however if you plan on fully utilizing the compressor flow of the 6262 down the road then you should be ok, it just won't be optimal for lower power levels.
if you only want 500ish hp then something like a gt/gtx3076r would be much more suitable than the 6262. Not to mention having better response and a much broader, useable powerband with plenty of torque.
the 6262 even on a 2 liter is fairly top end oriented so you might only have 3,000rpm of useable powerband as opposed to over 4-5k of powerband on a smaller turbo.
it all comes down to how much power you want to make and what kind of powerband you want.

OP you never stated an actual power goal. You want to run 10s consistently? A 5858 would get you there with some good driving. Buddies brother made 467 on a piston rod b16 and ran a 10.9x. The 5858 will put down close to 600 maxed out. If its mainly for the drag strip the 6262 is fine. I agree with wantboost though and say its not really needed if you plan to call it quits at 500.
