Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly????

I bought my engine with the oil Pan already tapped for turbo and I have been hearing that the return line is suposed to be above the oil level. I know for sure that when i first starting putting oil in my engine and i forgot to cover the hole up it starting pouring out of the tap hole. Is this a big problem, will i have to retap??? I can post pictures later. Thanks

I am going home right now to host some pics of it. HOpefully it will help. It is on the Drivers Side of the oil pan and about in the middle from the bottom of the oil pan to the block. BTW, it is rigged so the oil won't come out. Please don't make fun when i post the pic https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (95c1v1cs1)

oil return on turbines is gravity feed.

technically, you want the return to be above the oil level.

if it isnt, that's not necessarily a problem... oil that drains from the turbo is being pumped from the oil pan, so an essentially fixed level of fluid is in there.

the only time it becomes a trouble situation is if the oil level is high enough to prevent oil draining from the turbine... then you'll end up cooking the oil inside the turbine. this is probably nowhere near your situation.

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (95c1v1cs1)

yes that is way to low for your return

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (95c1v1cs1)

that looks a little low to me...mine is up about 1 1/2 inch from that...it's hard to say...while driving most of the oil is being pumped throughout the engine and theres not much in the pan...but trouble starts when going up hill or something...

BTW...you can buy a cap for the AN fitting..about 3 dollars at Jes..

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (CzanSOHC)

that thing waaaay to low, should be up as high possible in order to prevent the return line from backing up.

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (CzanSOHC)

It is too low. Your oil will have a problem draining back in against the pressure. You should go up some. Sorry to say http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif You might blow you oil seals in your turbo for the return line draining so low.

Tig weld an .063" Aluminum plate over the existing. You will have to drop your pan for this, also you need a welder that knows what he is doing. Honda oil pans are not the easiest aluminum to weld.

It's a steel pan.

god damnit...my oil pan is tapped at about the same place.

you can run it where it is if you make a reserve box or something inline with the oil return. It would just be like a little reserve tank the oil could go to if it started backing up. It might be ok where it is though. You really do want it as high as possible but stock turbo VW's have their oil return line low like that from factory.

its kinda strange... mine is as high as it can go, yet when i remove the hose, oil will still come out from the oil pan.... and i only use 4 quarts of oil every time.

Re: Oil Pan Tapped incorrectly???? (Flamenco-T)

Sort it out!!! if u cant fiddle with the old pan then replace! i had the same problem! i removed it and placed the return feed as high as possible for it to gain better and efficient oil pressure movement... if u keep it like that for too long... u may find the pressure built in the return line and sump and blow off the return line and drain all your expensive oil on to the sh*tty road and carry on driving with your music until your motor sounds like an old washing machine https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif worse more.... insufficient oil return pressure? just leads to damaging the seals of your much loved turbo... so use common sense and just replace the pan drill a 'round hole' and insert it with a good flushed fitting and u'll neva need to fink about it again! ps, dont weld! its messy, cheap and not reliable.... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
