Oil cooler system questions
I'm adding an Earls 19 row narrow oil cooler to my built d16y8. I plan on using the Mishimoto non thermostatic oil sandwich plate. I like the fact it had two ports for sending units and two -10 lines. I don't want to deal with a chance of a thermostat getting stuck. I'd much rather monitor my oil temps.
Anyways, do I need to add extra oil to the system to compensate for the added volume? Right now the d16y8 requires less than 4 quarts of oil. Do I bump it up to an even 4? Thanks!

Re: Oil cooler system questions
You're worrying about the wrong thing, Mike.... The purpose of the thermostat is to prevent the oil cooler from getting oil at cold start ups, where the engine initially gets starved of oil (I've had this happen to me in the past with non-oil thermostat system), in which while the oil is cold and "thick", the bearings get lubricated immediately at startup and not cause a starving condition in which you might spin a bearing or score the head.
Its not for monitoring your temperatures like a water thermostat.. You can monitor oil temps on your own.
1. GET A SANDWICH WITH A THERMOSTAT like Mocal and not that Mishi-monkey ****.
2. Yes, add extra oil to the system for added volume. About a quart..
Here's a great blog on it...

Re: Oil cooler system questions
Mac,
I understand te thermostat isn't for monitoring temps and what it does. I was saying I would monitor my oil temps upon start up an making sure it was to temp before running it. I do however understand what you are saying. Thanks!
This may be too much trouble than its worth with the y8's shitty oil system. I do have an endyn pump but still have a y8 crank...
Mac, you have a PM.
