Default Oil change question - Which myth is true or not myth...

I plan to switch to synthetic oil before installing turbo. I recall reading a while back that its good to use synthetic for longer turbo life, since it doesn't leave (i can't remember exactly what it is that builts up) inside turbo?

or..

I have to change the oil every 3000 miles and can get away with regular oil?
Currently i flush oil every 3750 miles

I plan on runny conventional for the first 500 miles on my turbo, then switch to royal purple. I change filter and oil every 2.5-3 k.

i've heard that before, running conventional oil on turbo for first few hundred miles, is there a reason to that?

I believe it is to help "set" the oil seals on the turbo.

Ive always used syn from day 1 with no probs.. Synthetic takes more heat to break down the chains that hold a "film" together. Now on a new motor you want to use a non-syn for the break in.

If you change your oil and filter religiously at 3000 miles, you can use regular oil. Regular oil will not show signs of breaking down in that time period, that is why 3000 mile oil changes are overkill.

Synthetic oil can run extended change intervals, but the oil companies don't tell you that. Synth's also hold up to heat better so are more suited to turbos which subject the engine to more concentrated heating.

If you run an oil-cooled turbo then coking (the word you could not remember) is an issue and synthetic is best, but most turbos are water-cooled so coking is not much of an issue.

So, for maximum safety run synthetic, but conventional is OK too.

Randy

And yes, on older engines syhtetic can leak more through older, dryer gaskets and seals.

Turbo seals are seated during assembly, there is no break-in time for a turbo.

"Coke" builds up inside the turbo. It forms these deposits when oil burns. I've always heard about avoiding syn. oil for piston ring seating, but never for turbo oil seal seating. That's intresting. Can anybody confirm or dispute this?

Edit: Ya what the guy above said. Some of the car makers are now using extended oil change intervals now. BMW and mercedes are going with 15k reccomended oil change intervals on synthetic.

would like to know that, and would "coke" build up inside the turbo from both regular and synthetic oil?

[QUOTE]"Coke" builds up inside the turbo. [QUOTE]

Oh great.. now we're going to have a bunch of crackheads pulling out thier oil feed line and snorting the turbo shaft.

So, you guys change oil every 3000 miles? I thought after u put a turbo on the car, you have to do it every 1500.
