Oh man......spun a bearing!!
Well guys, I finally did it. It's pretty scary to hear your rod banging around at 80mph. I even drove it the rest of the way home.
I knew the turbo was gonna be the death of me!!!
What should I do now? My friend can give me a 97 LS motor for $300. Should I work that up?

Re: Oh man......spun a bearing!! (falconGSR)
what are the details of your setup and how hard were you driving?
I boosted hard at 6psi for about 5 seconds until the EGT went to 1350F then I let off. Then I heard the knocking.
Heehee.....I mean, Doh!

what does mean when you spin a bearing? is there a way to prevent it? does it only happen if you're boosting too high?

Well.. are you sure you spun a bearing? Also.. I'm pretty sure IF you did spin a bearing, it had little to do with the turbo. Usually spinning a bearing is caused by poor maintenance, oil starvation, or improperly sized bearings.

9 out of 10 times it's oiling (or lack thereof) or so I've been told by a few techs. Not something common in well mainatined car but, it happens I guess
And an LS block for $300?? Got any more??

Yup, lack of oil seems to be it. I dunno how I could be so stupid.
When I drained all my oil, it only filled 1/3rd of a gallon milk container.
Oh well, rebuild is in the process.....wish me luck.

Hah! The oil light is a piece of ! That thing wont go on till youre about dry!
The sensor detetcs low oil pressure, not low oil levels. If you still have some oil in there it will still make some pressure , so the idiot light wont come on
Afetrmarket oil pressure and oil temp gauges

Re: Oh man......spun a bearing!! (HX_Guy)
Well, but if you still have oil pressure that means there is enough oil at the bottom of the pan for the oil sump to pick up oil and lubricate the motor.
My CRX keep using lots of oil. I checked it the other day and it didn't even register on the dip stick so I put about 1.5 quarts in and it was set I think it has a spun rod bearing though too... cause I hear this knocking from 3k-4krpm. Hope it's just an exhaust leak or something.

That is true, but running on low oil, although it still lubricates, the motor will get much hotter and that may cause the problem as well, no?

Yes. it also destroys the oil more quickly... And when the oil light does come on... that means your motor is not getting enough oil so you're screwed. My oil light was blicking for a fraction of a second when decelerating on a hill... so I knew it was time for some oil
