your fuel delievery will be a big problem
edit: you would be better off some how shaving the head or the block so it will run higher comperssion

i think the rule of thumb is no more then 50% of the power the motor already makes. so that would be like what a 2.5hp shot of nos. lol

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (CovertFI)
they sell small shots of nitrous for those little motor scooters. I think they just use a modded weedwacker motor which cant be more than 2 hp max. I dunno how they jet a 1-2 shot LOL!
If you wanna get a turbo, look into IHI. They sell super small turbos. Anyone remember the turbo bar stool? It used an IHI. Ive also seen a turbo mini bike at moroso that a guy used to zoom around the pits and im pretty sure it used an IHI as well.

search "bar stool racing" on google. some guy turbos OHC honda industrial engines. The tiny turbos are $1250 or so. A draw through setup should work alright.

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (Autocratic_1st_Gen)
I was hoping to keep cost at a min. I read about other engine mods that can be done to B+S engines, like blue printing, cams, carbs, and milling the head. But My guess would be that I would need stronger internals. I have no clue where to get forged piston + rod (Good thing there is only one) but I guess JE can make custom pistons/piston. For a turbo I was hoping to use the smallest stock turbo off a car out there. Saab T25? Subura IHI? Maybee somthing off a European Domestic 1.0 L Turbo car.

Why not just throw on a 2 stroke 50cc dirtbike motor? Cheaper and more fun. Imagine a 5 speed sequential tranny on a go-kart!

Yes, you can turbocharge a Briggs & ScrapIron motor. It's easier than turboing an FI engine. Your best bet would be to buy this:
and go from there.
A 50cc two stroke bike motor won't do diddly on a kart.
Also, Saabs use a T3. The Subee IHI is tiny; very similar to the IHI in the Mazda 323 GTX, shown here:
Yes, that's a CD for size comparason. The inlet is 37mm and the exducer is 34mm. It has a compressor AR ratio of .50, and I see full boost (9 PSI) at 2200 RPM on my D16Z6. I'm sure it'd spool on a 300cc lawnmower motor.
Nawwws is a joke unless your dragging. It's a non- linear on/ off power switch and is totally undrivable in the turns, where throttle modulation is key. But, if you like to go fast in a straight line and you've never explored throttle settings between idle and WOT, go for it.

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (dangerzone)
What can would I have to do about oil for the turbo? I don't think the B+S engine has much oil pressure to spare. Also I saw the Turbo Bar stool. He has the carberator before the turbo inlet. And for oil he made his own belt driven pump. But I can't make my own so is there anything out there that would suit my needs?
Also what is the displacment of a 5 HP BS engine?

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (89civic1.8T)
Just get an 80cc or 125cc dirt bike engine. That's what the shifter kart classes are all about. My 80cc engine puts out about 25 hp. That modded Briggs engine puts out about 7 at most in its current form.
The dirt bike engines all have 6 speed gearboxes, too. You can do this with all off-the-shelf components.
If the fun in this project is in the turbo itself, then that's a different story.
The Briggs engine is around 300cc, I believe.

Later in my life I would like to build this....heeheehhheheheh
-custom made all wheel drive go kart chassis
-small low profile suspension
-very wide tires...yet low profile
-Crotch Rocket motor
-small rollcage
-steering wheel mounted solinoid shifter
Yeah it will be fun!
maybe even do a nitrous setup!
that would be so cool, I might even stop working on the CRX...yeah right.

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (89civic1.8T)
Briggs & ScrapIron 5HP motor is 206cc (I was wrong ).
Oil- The motor has NO oil pressure as the con rod has a splash stick that just sorta throws the oil all over the place in the crank case. You'd need a pump like he had. You can buy electric oil pumps that are used for marine use for dirt cheap.
Carb before the turbo- Well, I can't remember it for certain, so I'm not even going to get into it, and I can't find my damn book, but the answer is in Maximum Boost. Go buy the damn book; it's $20 and there's no reason why you shouldn't have it if you're considering a home made turbo setup. I do remember this- draw through setups suck bawlz compared to blow through. And no, you don't need a special carb to do a blow through.
*edit- Joel, remember CRXPO-E?

******* Noob's...
....a heavy duty solinoid will have no problem if the shaft is lengthened...Hell I'll make a motorized setup if I have too...
About your rant on nitrous....
This is a PROJECT...I know all about ******* nitrous and FI setups
I would like to keep the project as cheep as possible...and with a go-kart I really don't need all that much power to go Really freaking fast!!!
REMEMBER THIS IS A ******* GO-KART....my honda is turbo...NO NITROUS.
Nitrous = CHEEP
MY rant....

When my son gets older (he is 2) he is getting a full rollcage dune buggy car with a turbo motorcycle engine. It'll be a father-son project. No NOS for me, I can't find the time to refill the bottle.

Re: O/T but turbo related........ (RGAZ)
Exaclty....well almost
I am not going to make body panals for the tubing, or make wings, but it esentially is an F1.
I want it to kinda be like a fun little roadster, I can take to tracks, and even just some deserted road...and let loose
I think it will be a lot more fun to build a custom chassis that is All wheel drive!
Plus, in my style, this will be a "budget" build up....I will find parts from junk yards, stuff just laying around in my garage, and try to use parts that are easily acceseble if I ever need to replace anything.
Can't wait till i get a new job to pay for all of it though!
Just dreaming at this point
