Default No cat = smelling exhaust a lot more???

I am running a maxrev turbo kit without a cat. When stopped at lights I can really smell the exhaust fumes...like A LOT. I was wondering if this is normal for running no cat, or if there is some sort of leak where the downpipe connects to the exhaust...If so could I get the downpipe just welded directly to the exhaust..
