newbie turbo SOHC questions
i have a question for all of you turbo guys. i am going to be boosing a d16y8 soon and i need to know what i should use. what turbo would be the best for a daily driven application that would also like to run 13s. i know that i am not going to get into the 13s with just the turbo, but i am going to build the motor in the future as well. so what manifold/turbo combination would be the best?? i was originally thinking about using the greddy kit, but i heard they werent very good for high horsepower applications. oh and i have a 96 hatch if that matters. thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (hatch101)
there are a few around here who have gotten into the 13s with the greddy kit on their sohcs. i think its very possible. and esp since you plan to build up ur motor it shouldnt be problem. the greddy is an affordable kit that fits great and is good for a daily driver. plus you won't have to build up in the beginning and you can add on whatever parts you want as you go along and have the money. for the cost i'd stick with the greddy kit. few guy have the apexi kit too but the cost prevented me from getting one instead of the greddy.

The greddy kit has hit 12s....... So yeah I do not know what your horsepower goals are the greddy kit will see 230whp easy... That is very low 13s high 12s with traction.... If you are only after 13s get the greddy kit with about 10psi standard internals with slicks low 13s high 12s are very possible. Other then that drag or revhard kits are known to make more power just make sure you spend the money on tuning..

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (turbozxi)
Get a Greddy Turbo Kit, Intercooler, BOV, Boost controller, Turbo Timer, Gauges
You should be hitting 13's no problem but remember tuning is the key...its up to you whether you want to buy a standalone or use the AFC-HACK but dont use that blue box or whatever also your car is very light compared to coupes so you have an advantage also when your finished go grab some light 15" rims and a carbon fiber hood

also your car is very light compared to coupes
If you want an true bolot on kit, easy install, AESOME quality, w/ a turbo thats good for 12's w/ a quick spool...you want the Apexi kit!.... I'know it's kinda expensive but it si a ball bearing turbo effient up to 18psi...and you can also upgrade to a beefy VF22 turbo...APexi

the difference between a DX hatch and a DX coupe is a merly 35lbs acording to my helms.

I've never seen that number with a greddy kit.

>>230 on a D16Y8 is not that attainable<<
There are at least a couple of members on this forum who have gotten pretty close to that number on stock internals.
Extensive tuning helps for sure, but IMO education is the key for the person who started this thread. Read everything you can get your hands on for about a year before doing anything. Look at other FI'd Hondas and talk to their owners face to face (not just on the internet... it's amazing how full of crap many of these posters are). Use your less patient friends as guinea pigs... etc.
A lot of things change when you start considering positive manifold pressure and you need to be a student of boost or you will suffer some serious dissappointment, guaranteed. Sucks I know, but not as bad as having your car on blocks for a month, then blowing the motor the day after you get it done...

Yeah 230 on a D16Y8 is not that attainable, believe me. You will be happy if you see upper 100 or into the low 200's.

It will be harder to get 230 on a Greddy kit. But with a built motor it should be cake.

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (LSDelSol)
Good flowing kit and big DP and exhaust will help nicely. Remember to loosen up those resrictions in the charge pipes and TB and you'll see 230 easier. Good luck.
I've noticed most people don't know that with larger tubing and TB you'll encounter less turbulance and heat. Seems to me the old-school turbo guys here aren't giving out any of the secrets. That means you can run more timing. You can always try alcohol injection too.

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (tzsir)
If you want 230hp out of the greddy kit your probably better off going with a t3/t4 setup...but if you want to hit high 13s you can do it with the Greddy

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (hatch101)
I saw an Ad for Edelbrock's new Emissions legal turbo kit for the D16Y8 coming soon. It supposedly even has a Tial blow off valve, Garrett ball bearing turbo and new Performer X manifold with 4 additional injectors. Might be worth looking at cause I hear its about 3k complete with ECU!!

Man, greddy kit seems the way to go. piece by peice build up amounts the same w/o the street legalness. but man, the idea of putting together your OWN KIT! maybe i'll save up to save for the kit.

Re: newbie turbo SOHC questions (sNoOziN' EF8)
I believe Vtec boost-less Civic used the greddy kit didn't he at 12psi he had something like 222whp all he would of had to do is run 1 more pound of boost theres your magic number.... So most of the posts above are crap I have seen similar numbers many times... Remember you don't really want to run more then 230 whp on a stock sohc its very risky, so unless building you engine or are prepared to blow it, your wasting money going for the big turbos Yo.
