New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
Hey all, it has been a long time since my last post because I moved on to tinkering with BMWs but I still have my old CRX to keep the spirit alive. Anywho, I have been on the hunt for an old AWD honda wagon circa late 80's to build a winter beater out of. After seeing many beat down and trashed cars, I started looking into first gen CR-Vs.
Now on to my questions, I am going to build a cheap turbo cr-v to serve as a winter beater/grocery getter and I am only really familiar with the B16 motor. I am looking to pick up a stock 5sp model and with spare parts I can assemble some sort of home brew turbo kit. What are the limits of a stock B20? I will be retaining stock rev limit and sizing the turbo accordingly. I am thinking less than 300whp mainly not to destroy the lightweight driveline. It will not be a drag car so I am thinking I should be fine around 275whp with like a GT25 or maybe something a little smaller to create a fairly usable power curve.
I am curious to what the rpm limits of the factory rotating assembly and valvetrain are as well. I am guessing around 7000rpm.
What do you think? I though about doing a turbo CR-VTEC but the idea here is cheap and use what I have.

Haha that sounds like a really fun/funny project. You might wanna try one of those disco potatoes, or a mid-size T3/T04E (.50 or .57). Prolly guessing it would be easier to find a T3 style manifold than a T25 one.

Well I have an ond T3/T04E .57 with a .63 a/r somewhere but I thought that it might be a bit too large given the rather poopy airflow of that motor.
Also, I also even considered an automatic but I am not sure what that will hold before dying. However that would almost guarantee it to be a turd even with boost.

Nah the 2.0L will spool the .57 up nicely and with your goals you will be running it right in it's comfortable/lazy/efficient part of the compressor map. I have been running a .57 with Stage3/.63 on a 84.5x87.2 (2L GS-R) for 6 years now and love it. 15-20spi by 3200-3500RPM. My motor asks too much from the .57 at high-RPM but a lower revving B20B looks about perfect on paper.

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
I just saw a 12-sec stock-looking CR-V on some vid site. I just don't know if it was AWD, but it seemed to launch like it was. AFAIK the real problem is the rear diff will un-power the rear wheels when it gets overworked/overpowered.
The b20 can take enoough abuse if you do it right. With an AFC hack it wil give up the ghost sooner than later, but with decent a dyno- and street-tuned EMS people can run 300hp on them...if you add a vtec head or decent cams.
A T3 would be a better mix. The minimum I'd run would be a 60trim T3 with a stg3/.63ar hotside for a 2.0L motor. Any more than that and you'll just be adding lag.

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
This will not be a hack job. It will be running a good tune on crome or neptune or the like. I understand the AWD driveline is the weak link and will not be drag racing the car. It will more be a rain/snow or crap hauler car and just want to add some giddy up to its step. I would be fine with it somewhere in the 14's.
I might just start with my T3/T04E .63 ar .57 trim and see how it goes. Being that I am not shooting for more than 300 whp and only revving to 7k max, I am guessing that that will be the biggest I want to go.
Should be a fun little project.

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
the stock valve train on the b20 heads is a little weaker than on ls heads. i wouldnt get to rev happy with it. try to keep it to 6500rpm or slap in some springs or at least some ls springs to hit the 7k mark. Ive seen b20s float valves at 7k many times

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
Sounds like a plan. Springs are cheap, might just do that to be safe. I just don't want to end up with a really narrow powerband to to limited rpm. What do you think a T3/T04E .63 ar .57 trim would spool up at to make 14 or so psi on a B20? 3000-3500rpm?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
I'm running a 57 trim .63 a/r t3/t4 on a 2L LSVTEC right now. I get full boost around 3500 with a full 3" exhaust on a ramhorn and it's easily making decent boost by 3k on the highway. Expect a bit lower boost threshold with a log manifold (so that's the route I'd recommend for you). Also a boost controller can work wonders.

B20 heads are identical to LS heads other than the P8R

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
Just an update. Have most the parts now for the pretty standard T3/T04E log setups but still looking for the right CRV...Manuals are a lot harder to find than I thought!

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
For what you're hoping to do, i would suggest a 50 trim. It isn't as laggy as the 57 and will easily make the power you're looking to make without being overkill. Hell, a T3 Super 60 would even be a good choice. Accentuate the torque already present in the B20

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
I think a 50 trim would be better suited however I already had a 57 on hand. If it is too laggy I will just swap it out for a used 50 trim.
I could always slap the SC61 on there

Re: New winter beater project: Turbo CR-V
its all been done before. i own a Boosted LS Civic and i daily a CRV
What would be an awesome swap into a CRV is a J32a2 or J35a3 v6 swap! 260 - 300 hP STOCK and no worrys about wastegates..turbos.. if i had money to spend id to that!
cheak out my buddies at j32a.com
