New SOHC turbo build...Lots of pics inside
Hey Guys, got rid of my old turbo setup after having run that for about 3 months. I finally got everything bought and put on my del sol. (takes awhile being a poor college student without a job) Anyway I'm hoping of making between 300-350 whp out her. Its a 93' Del Sol The mod list is as follows:
-D16z6
-PP Head
-3 angle valve job
-All new valves
-OBX intake mani (only cheap thing on the car soon to go probably)
-ARP Headstuds
-Nippion Racing 3 Layer Head Gasket
-Blocked bored .020 over
-Fully balanced crank
-Scat Rods with ARP 2000 rod bolts
-JE Pistions w/ JE Pro Seal Rings
-King Rod and Main Bearings
-Lightened/Resurfaced/Balanced Stock Flywheel
-ACT unsprung 6 puck clutch with xtreme pressure plate
-SillySOHC (h-t member) Equal length ram horn mani.
-Precision SC34 Turbo
-RC 550cc injectors
-Custom 2.5" intercooler piping
-Turbo XS RFL BOV
-Johnnyracecar 6" FMIC
-Tial 38mm wastegate
-Kteller 3" turbo back exhaust (No cat) to 3" turbo muffler
-GM 3 bar map sensor
-Walbro 255 fuel pump
-Oil catch can
-It will be dyno tuned in the next few weeks using uberdata by J-K-Tuning.com
Last weekend we (me and John Kerr a.k.a. J-K-Tuning.com) worked on it and it will be running this weekend. Ok on with the pics---->
My Car up on stands when we started working on her
Turbo, Manifold, SC34, and Tial wastegate Installed
Forming of the D/P
Kerr fitting up the last little piece of the D/P to meet up with the Kteller exhaust
Nice little shot there of me holding the finished D/P
Me holding the kteller
Muffler being finished up being connected
Exhaust and D/P completed and on the car
D/P connected and ready to role (still have to make my dumptube)
Finished engine compartment (manifold wrapped so it doesnt burn the hood cause its pretty dang close to it)
Front end pic with the bumper off
Ok there ya go....videos and dyno charts will be up within the next few weeks. Just wanted to get this up showing my progress. Any input is welcome. Thanks for looking guys and girls!

Read up, its pretty much fully built minus sleeves.
The kteller exhaust was a very good piece. It fit perfect and just needed the hangers and muffler added to it, it had great fitment.

Stock sleeves is what I meant by stock block.
I'm starting to work out the budget for my next build and I can't decide if I want to wait all summer to save the money to have my block sleeved and assembled by Laskey Racing or not. I don't know if I should spend $1,000 on rods, pistons, and devcon or $3,000 on a sleeved and built block.
Pretty much what you're doing with a final goal of going into next season with 400-450whp.

Re: New SOHC turbo build...Lots of pics inside (Everyones Hero)
well yeah i was in the same dilema when i started this build. I wanted to make massive amounts of power out of my d. My only thing is that my car is a street car in which 300-350 whp is more than enough. I was reading that sleeving a d series is kinda pointless because of the poor flowing head. Basically the head limits the amount of power you can make, but with a nicely ported head 400-450 horsepower is doable on a d but would def. want to have sleeves then. There was one post on here where they had a single cam making over 400 hp on stock sleeves but i don't believe it lasted too long

Mine is also going to be a DD/drag car. At first I was planning on 300whp, but the more I thought about it the more I wanted to take it to 400whp.
My reasoning is that I've already got to spend the money on the rods and pistons just to go to 300whp, I might as well take advantage of them and go to 400whp.
Where'd you get your head ported at? I've found porting anywhere from $300 to $1200.

I think you can say that about any engine.

It is cheap in price, but not so in quality.

Eh, they obviously aren't the best. But I would go with them because of price. Yes the core could be better, but it works just fine for a setup like this.

Re: New SOHC turbo build...Lots of pics inside (93turbo16)
Awesome setup
Simple and effective.
I really need to get off my **** and start building another engine. Of course, I just got done breaking in the last engine I built. lol.
I HATE it that as soon as I build an engine and start driving the car, I get bored and want to start building another.
I know if I build another turbo d-series, I'll just want to get started on a built b-series.
Damn never ending cycle!
Anyways, good luck with the startup and tuning. Make sure to keep us updated, I'm interested in hearing how much boost it takes to reach your goals with that turbo.

I know exactly what you mean Looks good man, when you get this thing back up to school I'll show you what a real stock block can do Looks like a very nice build, John knows what he's doing
