New GT3071 Turbo- car undrivable?
Ok, just got my car back- I can't weld so I had some guys put in a new downpipe/ WG line (First State Motorsports- good group). Here's ths skinny:
Inline pro ss manifold
Tail 38mm WG
3" full exhaust/ downpipe with 3" cat
GT 3071 BB turbo .48 exhaust, .71 comp (I think)
STOCK B18B
310cc injectors Hondata 4B
S80 USDM Type R tranny
Boost goes positive around 2k RPM!
Full boost at around 3K!
Here is a screenshot a 5th gear pull:
I had to stop b/c I was approaching 100mph so fast, I think I dropped a load.
Here is the recording:
http://home.comcast.net/~tailwags/r21.rec
While you may be thinking, "wow, thats cool", I'm kind of at a loss. The car is basically uncontrollable at anything more than half throttle. Boost response is nearly instant above 3K!
I've had two other turbo engines in this car, neither of them was like this.
I wanted to get a good, all-round autocross car. It's going to tak a long time to get "used" to this.
First gear is useless, second gear spins, even third gear will spin... I can't describe how insanely fast this car feels running only 9psi.
How do you guys with 300+ HP drive your car on the street?
PS- this is not a brag thread, I really did not expect this much of a jump in performance from switching from my old setup (T3/T4B log manifold).
Thanks,
Sean

It's not hard to drive because you have 300hp, it's hard to drive because you have torque and a close ratio tranny! Enjoy it!

I wouldn't worry about having too much power... you will get used to driving it...
You might have to modify your driving style a bit and stay out of the gas when you know it's not going to do you any good.... I wouldn't worry about it though, better to have too much power than not enough

You just need better suspension, tires, gearing and redline to make use of the power. Lightening up the car helps traction as well.
I am sure you have seen the video of my GT28RS 11.5:1 CR Integra GSR with ITB's... I only had traction issues for first gear (cold tires), and the rest of the gears pulled very nicely.
Right now I am on my winter tires and I am going through the same problems as you are -- 1st-3rd gear is useless. Boost hits at 3000RPM and power is instantaneous. I can break loose at 3rd gear just by hitting the throttle anywhere above 3500RPM.
So looks like it's time for you to invest in some traction goodies You should be able to hook up fine, and then you can start really enjoying the response and the wide power curve.

While I like the ITR tranny on a high revving setup, that is one tight setup for an LS motor. What is that setup making power till, 7000 RPM's? I'd consider an LS tranny, and look into some bigger injectors ASAP.

before anything else... are you trying to have traction in this freezing weather? if you're loosing traction a bit in 3rd, more than likely you won't be during summer, and probably loosing a bit in 2nd
you could get gear dependand boost controller and smaller tial spring.. at lower whp you'll be able to keep traction in lower gears and EBC should automatically adjust fo higher speeds
another thing that may help is better tires, DR are good but not for current weather, for street tire i'd suggest kumho mx - also bad for winter/snow

If you think that the gt3071 is responsive, try a gt28rs. I was able to make the same boost around 1-1.5k earlier than the gt3071 that i was running previously on my engine.

That car pulls way to hard for autocross, time to let me sell you some 24.5's and hit the dragstrip I was very impressed with the 3071 on this car, but i do think the conditions have alot to do with your traction issues. Anywho, im sure itll scare the hell out of wifey

I told you that the car spooled instantly. I think if we get a .63 housing on there it'll help slightly. Also some drag radials at low pressure will help. But yeah its pretty sick.
Where's the pics at?

It's friggin like -17 to -20 deg celsius for the past month.... This whole winter **** is just not my ideal time to hit the dyno... I need to wait until spring time comes so I can enjoy my dyno time rather then freezing my nuts off
hybridsol, I won't change over to a larger A/R housing if your powerband doesn't die off near redline... If you can hook up that midrange power and response with better tires and suspension, you will love it. Plus I am driving my Teg as a daily driver, and it sure owns when you can pass those SUV's in 5th gear at 60km/h or so when they are going WOT If you do hit the track (roadracing or AutoX), you will be on R-tires anyway and I bet you will start putting those power to the ground.

Re: (ladysman)
Wow, lot's of responses- thanks!
About the injectors- I have not run a wideband on it yet, but the injectors run all the way up to 100% duty cycle. I have a set of 440's I can throw in, but it's freaking cold out right now. I have never had a problem with A/F runing leaner than 12.5:1, I run the fuel rail at 50psi...
I too thought the injectors would not be big enough, and they are not if I limited the duty cycle to 80%.
About the traction, I have 205/15 Falken Azenis tires and a full urathane kit/springs/shocks. I tested the car on a dry highway, before the snow.
I was going to post some video, but I can't get my capture card to work... I'll keep you posted.
As far as the pics go, my car is covered with salt so give me another week.
Anyways thanks for the replies. I too was wondering about the GT28RS, I heard it was better for this application.
Oh and I forgot to really plug this: First State Motorsports ROCKS! (seroiusly a very good group of real car guys!) http://www.fsmoto.com
Peace.

Re: (hybridsol)
Yeah the GT28Rs (a.ka. disco-potatoe) is an excellent turbo as mentioned before, as far as traction goes what are your spring/shock settings and is it a fully adj. suspension? You could really improve power delivery with some soft springs/shocks and some good (but expensive) R-compound rubber when it comes to race day.
