New to building a turbo motor..need info on LS-V turbo
Hi,im new to turbo charging a car. Im in the process of building a ls/VTEC motor for my Ef hatch. I was going to go NA but change my mind and want to do Ls/VTEC Turbo.
I have a b18a1 block with a gsr head. As of right now everything is still stock. I have p30 pistons on shotpeened ls rods that i was going to use but im not...way to high compression for turbo.
I'm curious as what setup you ls/vtec turbo guys are using on a stock block and what numbers your getting?
This is going to be a slow and long build for me bcuz i want to do it right and do it once. Im not trying to build a rocket just something with a little more pep..Boosting around 8-10lbs
Im in the process of searching and reading alot on here, but some info and guidence from you turbo guys will be greatly appreciated.

Man U FTW
What is your static compression with the setup listed?? High compression doesn't limit your overall power goal, it just dictates which octane fuel you'll have to run in order to reach certain goals. Also, dont base your goals in terms of PSI...rather, in terms of whp.

That's a bit steep. Generally i'd say go for it with the right tune, but since these are stock pistons, i wouldn't recommend it. That's not to say you couldn't turbo it, but your goals would have to be pretty small or you'd have to run a rather high octane fuel (100+) in order to combat detonation.

Re: (Schister66)
Thats what ive learned in the little bit of research ive done so far about building a turbo car .
Thats the reason im asking those who have built a ls/vtec turbo already what set up are they using. Im trying to get an idea of what pistons and rods to use on a stock block on low boost.
Can i use my ls rods with a turbo piston?

Re: (LA_HONDAS)
Is that with a GSR head? Where did you get that info?
I got mine from zealautowerks.com..check it out.
ls block b18a1
gsr head
p30 pistons
oem Ls head gasket

can't you just slap back on the stock pr4 pistons? and what are your power goals?

Re: (Rickdrizzle)
I can put the stock ones back on but i figured since its apart already i can upgrade to something better. Like i said before im not trying to build a rocket just something faster. I'd be happy with 250-350 hp.

People claim that the stock safe point for a b series is 300whp. So I'm pretty sure you can use the stock pr4 pistons and rods.

Re: (Rickdrizzle)
Thanks for your help and info. I'll keep that in mind if i choose to save money instead of buying new pistons.
Anyone else mind giving some helpful info or tips on my build?
Thanks!

Re: (MyHotsh)
if the engine is already torn apart, why not just get some low compression forged pistons in there? That way you wont have to worry about the oem pistons being a weak spot in the system. You said yourself... you want to do it right. Not neccessarily saying the oem pistons couldnt handle it but its w/e.
Also, theres an ls/vtec turbo thread somewhere in in the forced induction sections i think.... do a quick search on that and you should be good to go
edit: IMO the most important aspect of any efi engine build is the engine management system and tuning.

Re: (MyHotsh)
as far as EMS goes it's all about preference. Does your tuner specifically recommend a certain system? If he absolutely prefers the s300, and the $600 you will spend won't empty your pockets than go for it. It is great and regardless what people say, I think it's worth the money. If funds are an issue, consider crome and find a reputable tuner. good luck!

Re: (GT35R_EF)
I have a stock p28 and a stock p72, both obd1.
Which of the 2 would be better for tuning this set-up?
I am clueless as to what goes into tuning an engine. Would the tuner use the stock ecu and put a new chip in?
I have an idea of who i might use to tune my motor, but thats further down the line. I need to get all the right parts for my motor 1st.
