Mysterious engine dying problem? [6lbs gsr, hondata s200 tuned]
This is for user jaminonyourface because he is in the rain getting his car towed at the moment
Before I go on, here is the setup:
99 Civic with 01 GSR swap, obd2 gsr harness
Stock distributor and wires (33k)
NGK 7s spark plugs
Neukin turbo manifold
tial wastegate
some t3/t4 turbo - no filter
some intercooler
440cc injectors
walbro 255 lpf pump
aem fpr @ whatever psi tuner put it at
hondata s200 tuned by casey @ modacar
Anyway, here is the problem:
The car was driving perfect yesterday (cold, dry day), 30+ passes on the dyno plus some spirited street driving. Idles at a perfect 800 rpm. He said today (heavy rain) the car was driving normally at 3.5k rpm until all of a sudden the engine shuts off and hes coasting to a stop in neutral.
When the car is dead these things happen:
1. Car won't start (but it cranks, like a compression test)
2. None of the diagnostic lights come on when the key is in the "on" position (i.e. battery, oil, check engine, stuff on the gauge cluster)
3. Fuel pump doesnt come on
4. Power door locks and power windows stop working
All fuses are still intact
Heres the wierd part: The 1st time it broke down, it started up again after 5 minutes, but then broke again 10 minutes later. He had to wait 1 hour this time for it to start up again.
Keep in mind that when it starts up again, it runs great just like yesterday.
But then after parking it for a few hours, he drives for 10 minutes and the car breaks down again, but this time it won't start up anymore even after 1.5 hours of waiting.
What could be some problems?
update: its not the main relay cause I swapped it with a working one, same problem. I also started it up the next morning, it idled horribly and the check engine light came on. The car died before I could check the code.
heres a picture of his car for people that love pictures:

He's got an electrical problem. Start with the main relay and troubleshoot from there.
main relay under the dash
check all relays in the engine bay fuse block
Check for proper grounds

Re: (HybridcivicLS-T)
i've had my ignitor go out,
car would start up fine every time. just ran like **** once it did start.
not starting is more of a coil thing if you're talking about ignition componenets..

Come on people, pay attention to the symptoms.. What does the ignitor have to do with the power windows? heh
Check the ignition switch first, and related wiring. Then check all grounds.

I'm wondering if the person with the problem has followed up on any of the suggested problems....
MAIN RELAY
check the wiring harness ground on the thermo housing
check ALL of your fuses/relays in both fuse blocks

I put in a main relay from a 00 civic and it has the same problem. I put the main relay from this car into the 00 civic and it fired right up.
thats one off the list
I also started it up this morning, it idled horribly and the check engine light came on. The car died before I could check the code.

Just checked hondata box, not the problem. It was about 210whp @ 6psi. For some reason it didn't boost 10psi, so we're going back next week with a boost controller and tuning again

you do realize the car doesnt need to be running to check codes right? once it throws an error code its stored in the ECU till you clear it.

Heres why I cant check the code:

Re: Mysterious engine dying problem? [6lbs gsr, hondata s200 tuned] (jaminonyourface)
I had similar problems, was a bad engine ground, then a buddy hooked up some jumper cables to the engine and battery and some grounding points and it fired right up, might be worth a try...
