Is my turbo screwed? (pics)
I got the turbo a couple months ago. It's been sitting in the closet every since. I've neverreally taken a real hard look at it until now. Everything is good(no shaft play), but I found a crack inside the exhaust housing. Is the turbo still ok? Do I need a new one? I was thinking I could probably just get a new exhaust housing if I had to. Anyway here are the picks so you can see the crack.
You should be able to see the crack. If you cant, it's where the internal wastegate used to be hooked up.
I have heard that this is a common spot for exhaust housings to crack.

I have personally never seen something like this fixed but have you thought about taking the housing off and fixing it like they fix cracked heads and blocks? drilling it out on each end and putting a plug there?

Could I just buy a new exhaust housing, like this one maybe http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33742, and bolt that on? Assuming the a/r isn't totally different. I have no idea weather or not that would bolt up to turbo though.

The crack's fine. They're real common. You'll be ok.
As for welding it, they can't just spot weld it. They have to heat the exhaust side up in an oven, and the spray weld the crack. (this is one common way of doing it).
It's really not worth it, and it can cost quite a bit of money.

Ok well I'll just rock the turbo with the crack for a while. If it turns out it's no good I'll just buy another one. I personally don't think this turbo is worth spending much money on getting fixed.
