My Ls/vtec hopeful build. Need some help!!
Just looking for some advice here… as you can see.. I am hopeful on this build as I have not yet begun the process. First, I would like to say that I would be hopeful of 400 hp here, but would be very happy to reach 350 whp.
Build will be an ls/vtec b18c.
If anyone has criticism, positive or negative, I would greatly appreciate your help, conversation, and suggestions. Here is what I worked together so far.
B18a Block, stock sleeves, bored over to 81.5mm (was suggested this, but suggestions still needed)
B18a Crankshaft, micro-polished
ACL Bearings
Eagle Rods
ARP Rod Bolts (unsure here)
Wiseco 9.5:1 pistons (unsure here as well)
Hastings Rings
Moroso 6qt pan
Blox Magnetic Oil Drain Plug
Golden Eagle LS/VTEC Conversion Kit
Head gasket – should I use cometic or oem?
ITR Water pump
ITR Oil Pump
B18c1 Head, not sure how much head work will be necessary with a boosted app.
Supertech Dual Valve Springs & Titanium Retainers.
Crower Valve Guides
Valve Seals
3 Angle valve job (necessary?)
Civic Type R Cams (need help with this)
Skunk 2 Adjustable cam gears (should these be the ctr cam gears?)
Golden Eagle triple O ring cam seal
Mild Port Job (necessary)
Skunk2 intake manifold (Any better brands?)
Skunk2 70mm TB (Any better brands?)
Autowerks ramhorn manifold (Any better brands?)
Autowerks 2.5” piping
FMIC (I forget the name of the brand I have, does peak hp go by the average size)
Tial 50mm BOV
Tial 38mm wastegate with Autowerks dumptube (Should this be upgraded to a 44mm? Different dp recommended?)
Full vacuum, oil feed and return lines
GReddy pro-spec ebc
Plus all necessary new oem gaskets, nuts, and bolts. PLEASE! I need constructive criticism. I am new to building motors, so if I have something wrong please be blunt about it, and correct me. I want this to be effective, productive, and an enjoyable experience. Thank you all very much for your help.
Build will be an ls/vtec b18c.

Re: My Ls/vtec hopeful build. Need some help!!
thanks, a couple of the things you mentioned I actually forgot to add to the list.. and the b18c was in there only because that will be the head I am using for the build. Any other comments or confirmation on this list? Do you think this build will be beneficial to my expected whp goal?

Those are some of the things that I may need help with. Garrett Turbo perhaps? Precision? What is a better brand? What is the optimal size for this build and whp hopes? Should I have a p72 chipped and tuned? Or should I use an hondata s300?

i would go with a gt35r, this turbo will support your horsepower and have decent spool, as for the engine management, i would go with s300

Re: My Ls/vtec hopeful build. Need some help!!
uhhh......I just got rid of my build but for that goal that's overkill in my own opinion. I was shooting for 450WHP and this was my exact build after months of research and whatnot
B18a1 block with G.E desgin blockguard
SRP 81.5mm 8.5:1 w/ JE Piston rings
Eagle H beam rods with ARP bolts
ARP headstuds
B16 oil and water pump
Micropolished crank
ACL standard bearings and thrust washers
B16a2 head with stage 3 port and bowl work
ITR springs and retainers
Stock valves
Full Race Cam gears
ITR cams
Port matched stock intake manifold
Stock fuel rail
Stock LS throttle body w/ Blox TPS
AEM fpr
Siemen Dekas 750cc's
Blurr Turbo Manifold
38mm Tial gate with 10.5 lb spring
50mm BOV with 10lb spring
2.5 IC piping
27 by 11 by 3 FMIC
Precision SC6169sp (good up to 650hp)
So don't over do what doesn't need to be done really. It's nice to have all of the components but when it really comes down to it, OEM parts can hold a lot of stress in certain areas, you just have to know exactly what your application is and your power goals are

lsdb1 your very very true, but once he gets his hands on that 400 or so hp he is going to want more, and he can use almost everything he has on his next motor rather than upgrade later,
my buddy just made 370 hp on a b16 turbo with a 35r, its a fun street car, he has a victor x intake manifold,70mm tb stock gsr cams, ramhorn, etc...me personally would rather make sure i hit my goal then just come close!

Re: My Ls/vtec hopeful build. Need some help!!
alright, here goes...
81.5mm is a good idea. eagle rods and any of the name brand 9:1 pistons are fine. (ive used cp and wiseco in the past)
dont waste your money on a moroso oil pan
unless your crank is beat you dont have to micropolish it
ive used oem headgaskets with no issues
definately arp headstuds
unless your head is beat up you can use the oem valve guides
oem valveseals, ive had bad luck with mis sized replacement ones
ctr cams and adj. gears are an excellent choice. im running them with supertech valvetrain like you plan to.
you dont have to port the head, for your power dont worry about it. i would get an aftermarket intake manifold though.
s300 is an awesome choice, but i dont think you can go wrong with like neptune or ectune either.
unless your pocket is bottomless you dont need a 35r though it would be nice to have.
the power you want can be made with many turbos that are half the price, 60 trim, 60-1, sc34, sc61 etc...
personally i made 430 last year with a t3 60-1 which is good up to low 500s on race gas efficiently. im looking to change over to an sc61 for this coming year as its a lil bigger

Re: My Ls/vtec hopeful build. Need some help!!
for 400 whp at the max i would just go with a 30r. Actually i would just get the compressor maps and read them then see what is best to your application.
http://www.mrcontrols.com/primers/sizing.htm
for mr2 s but you can adjust the formulas.
I have seen people making the same power in cars losing to the smaller turbo guy just bc his turbo is far better suited to their application.

gt30 or 57/60 trim t3 t4
i would recommend eCtune for mgmt but...
ask your tuner what he/she prefers...
