My D16Z6 turbo SOHC build (with pictures)
So this year I decided to do a bit of a build for my SOHC. Last year I ran a stock z6 with boost, and the previous year a d15 with boost.
This setup will consist of a stock sleeved D16z6 with Arias 9:1 75.5mm pistons and eagle H-beam rods.
Progress may be a little slow since Im not rushing but Ill post updates as they come.
This week I got the block and head back from the machine shop. The block was bore/honed .020 over. The head was torn down, valve guide bushings replaced, new seals, 3 angle valve job, and surface machined for a perfect seal. It was also bead blasted and has been port and polished.
Yesterday I threw a quick spray of high temp aluminum paint on the block.
Here you can see the freshly honed finish. The hone was done slightly smoother than some to allow for longer ring life. This means my rings will take slightly longer to seal properly though.
Here you can see the notches needed to clear the eagle rods.
The piston and rod combo. (sorry its a little out of focus, quick snap)
The freshly machined head. Looks so clean it almost seems like a shame to put it on.
The old bearings/rods/pistons that I pulled out. I kept them all in order just in case. (couple bearings still in the block for attaching to the hone machine)
Oh and of course, this build powered by heineken.
Thats it for now.

lookin good I'm gonna start a thread on my d series build this year as soon as it starts going together. I built one last year but I spun a bearing so I'm at it again.

yeah 9500 rpm on a stock y8 oil pump will do that to ya!! now you have a z6. NO MORE OILING ISSUES!

umm... all the d-series pumps are the same. And they all suck equally.
I wish we could fit B pumps on our motors; that would solve a lot of problems.

No. They y8 was made poorly and can't pump out much oil at high rpm thus leading to oil starvation and bang there goes a rod.

More like the piston design. Its just got such low recesses and is dimpled for them all the way to the outside of the piston. I just dont "like" it really... no real tech info to back me up . I got outta my engineering program years ago... and its all faded.
Its partially with how it its physically less material between the top ringland and that recessed area. Allowing less material to hold/disperse heat at that point.
Shrug, its just opinion.

really; i looked at my d16a6 and d16z6 pumps closely and internally they looked identical; and i looked at a y8 pump but didnt take it apart and they all looked very similar to identical.

Actually, the purpose of the coarseness to the hone is to allow deeper pockets for the oil to reside in. A smoother hone will = less oil on the cylinder walls and thus QUICKER ring wear.
Remember, the pitch and the coarseness to a hone are critical. The pitch cannot be too steep, or the oil will run back into the pan. Too flat, and you have too much oil on the cylinder walls and the oil control rings cannot keep up. At this point, you burn oil. The same idea when it comes to the grit used on the hone. Too smooth will allow shallower grooves for oil retention... Too coarse and you start gobbling up rings as you grind them past the valleys.
