Default My custom geared tranny, whatcha think?

I finished my trans a little while ago, and misplaced the specs. I thought I'd bounce it off of you guys to see what you thought

GSR trans: 4.40 final drive

GSR 1st : 3.230
GSR 2nd: 1.900
Civic Si 3rd: 1.458
Civic Si 4th: 1.107
LS 5th: .714
Quaife differential, all new bearings and seals.

Gears were choosen for a specific reason. It's a FWD, so traction's an issue, and this is a street car which will be seeing significant track duty, with a motor spec'd to generate 400-450whp depending on octane level. The goal for this car is to run 12.50's or faster on radials, 115mph traps, and mid 11's on slicks - on a full interior Civic EX (and I mean full down to stereo and spare). I thought I'd do some playing around to give myself an ideal tranny with the money i had to work with.

1st you're gonna spin, no matter what, same with second on street tires. So, I stuck with what I had, the GSR. GSR is spaced a tad bit longer than the b16/ITR trannies, this will hopefully allow some traction to be attained on the 1/2 shift. FWD cars are fastest in the 3/4 gears as traction is usually found somewhere in there, so I went with the shortest I could find, the Civic Si (which is shorter than ITR BTW). This should help lug that weight around 5th gear, I chose the LS, for the pure intentions of comfortable cruising - but it doesn't hurt that calculated speed with my tire size (215/45/16) is 200mph at 9krpm. I'll never see that speed, but should I ever need to appear on America's Wildest Police chases, my appearance will be brief My limited slip choice was easy - Quaifes hold up to the power, though I hate how they do not offer full lock up like a Kaaz does. All new bearings throughout b/c I'm thorough and hate opening trannies.

Just thought I'd bounce this off you guys, see what you thought.

tell is how it feels? did you hit your expectations on both slicks and radials at the track? how much was the overall set-up?

pushing that much power, you should see tens with slicks. I will be at the 450hp mark and was guarenteed 10's by Inlinepro.

not at all, the 15g couldn't handle it, let alone i think the sohc would die. Now a t4 will do the job for this new setup. 450 will also be left up to a gsr block, 440's, fmu, and the stock computer w/ vafc. 450 is pushing street legal issues from what i understand due to using the stock computer and all. I'll switch to something else soon though, just because the block will handle around 700hp and 450 is just not enough when i could see 600.

So whats the final drive out of? Is it the original gsr final, or an LS?

Im looking to do something like this as well. Maybe an itr 3rd--something a little wider than the Si's.

Also, did you use all new gears? If you have any spares laying around let me know!!

Looks very similar to a b17a YS1. My overall goals are similar to yours and I think the YS1 will do very well with a quaife. It has slightly shorter 1/2, same 3/4 as the Civic SI.

I think he'll have to. My fourth gear is the same and it only goes to around 100.

I'm not trying to rob your thread, but I guess you did it all yourself and I was wondering if you could direct me to a site that has a step by step of rebuilding tranny's. I have a HELMS, I've rebuilt three or four motors, changed just about everything possible except cracked a tranny. I might be keeping my gsr tranny which needs some new synchros. Any help, comments, insults appreciated...

P.S. Tranny sounds sick by the way...

Do you want to learn to do an overhaul or just change out the gear stacks?

Calculates to 130mph. I could only HOPE to have to shift to 5th

I used the original GSR final, a 4.40

Let me clarify, I did not build this tranny myself. Im a dino tuna, that's what I do. I left that job up to Steve from Bradenton Honda (he posts here as SeekerONE). There were some minor issues, but i can't remember them off hand. I used my original casing, 1/2 and final drive, bought a new Civic Si 3/4 gear set, and I raped a LS trans for the 5th gear I replaced all bearings and axle seals, and the diff was shimmed properly. I absolutely hate tranny problems, so I took every single possible precaution I could afford. My trans has probably 1500 invested in it.

All this, and my car doesn't fcking run

Looks interesting...my only complaint is that you used a gsr 4.40 final drive gear. This means you must have bought the gsr quaife since they have a final drive gear of their own. If you would have used a b16 final drive, which also would have had a 4.40 final drive, you could have used it in basicly any trany because the quaife for b16 and ls's go into hydro or cable plus if you wanted to mess around with it even more, you would have had the option of switching final drives....just would have been a bearing swap instead of a bearing, quaife and final drive gear swap. Sounds like good stuff though and it will be nice to be on a fresh trans.

autoEX: Just because you can make 450whp which is enough to run tens, doesnt mean your traction and driving skills will be there to go 10s. Theres a little more to it then that.

i knew about this prior, but I figured I'd deal with what I had, since I already had sunk way more into the trans than originally budgeted. Damn money always making comprimises, and I hate to comprimise.

nineseccrx your right, my driving in the begining probably won't get me directly into the 10's. I was just suggesting that the hp rating that he's aiming for will. I know there is alot more than just power needed to get lower et's. There has been alot of time and effort put into the planning of this car, so I can safely say that the car will be a 10 second car, i'll be the only thing to stop it from reaching that goal.

mattew-why be a smartass. Yes it's promised to see 10's at the level i am. I will need some practice on the car to get there, probably won't happen on the first pass, but i'll get there. I'm building her to be one of the fastest street cars, I believe with the platform we've started from, she will become that. And i mean by passing emissions and inspection legally, not paying somebody extra or having a friends shop pass my car. She will be a street legal car. And who are you to judge my driving, why say maybe with one of their drivers, how do you know they are a better driver than me.

i undertsand what ya saying 9 sec rex and it makes sense for him to use the B16 quaife that way he can use a si FD ring gear (4.440) or the Ls one. The gsr and R ones are larger in the middle of the ring. makes sense.

But at least now he can do a jdm FD and go with taller slicks

Also: ITR and SI greaing is IDENTICAL. Check your helms guys.

Tom.

9000rpm, when needed.

According to my helms, as well as http://www.hondaswap.com, 3/4 is shorter on b16 Si.

if i shift at 8, it will go 115mph, my goal for street tires 9k is not that high, 11k is high

Gear 8k 9k
---------------
1- - - 40 - 45
2- - - 68 - 75
3- - - 88 -100
4- - - 115 130

Those are each gear's mph at 8k, and 9k, with the tire size Im running. I have a whole chart here, its kewl

real simple. As long as you have traction, a shorter gear will out accelerate a longer gear. That's just plain facts. The rest is up to you.
