Is my crank trash? Engine builders please take a look....
This is my spare crank that I will use in my spare block when I build for boost in the upcoming weeks.
I am kinda skeptical on the surface on where the front and rear main seals run on. This is evidentally a high mileage block/crank, so I am thinking the the rubber seals got hard and caused this. Anyway, on both surfaces the seal wore into the surface of the crank. I took my caliper and measured the differences. Take a look.
This is the front main seal side. You can see the groove that was cut into it.
Specs are:
1.496" on the surface where the seal does not run on.
1.492" on the groove where the seal runs.
Now for the rear:
You can also see the groove. For those who see that line that looks like a crack--it isnt, its a dog hair--hehe.
Specs:
3.149" on the surface where the seal does not run on.
3.143" on the surface where the seal runs.
What do you guys think. Is this something that I should be concerned about? I was told that this can be repaired with a new ring that get machined/welded in place. Can anyone vouch for that and give a price if you know?
Thanks

Most used cranks look like that. New seals should fix it. Fit a new seal over it and see if it looks tight. If not, a crank rebuilder could lay a weld over the low spots and grind it back to spec. That would be cheaper than a new crank.

i've never seen anyone repairing a damaged crank, with hondas you replace with a new one. it is not even recommended to turn a honda crank.

it looks fine to me... ur only talking about a couple thousandths of an inch and the seal is rubber and does usually fit snugly around the crank... u can have a tiny bit of play with the clearance of the seal and the crank

Did i even charge you for it? i cant even remember. Thats why i build LS motors, they are a dime a dozen.
Im finally got to my 400 hp goal with no nitrous. Ill have the Pro RAce Fogger hooked up and ready to fire on Tuesday night. You should come up on Wednesday to the shop. Ill have it on the dyno tuning it. I want to get to about 500whp then run the imstar series. I have been driving the car everywhere and its holding up good so you never know, we could have the first 500whp street legal Honda and it would be an LS.

I think you charged me 10 bucks for the crank. SO basically free.
Man, I wish I could come up to the shop and see how your car is doing. Thing is right now I need a rebuild. One of my oil rings are shot and I burn a good amount of oil, so I dont really want to risk the 2 hour drive up there
I think that you definetly have the sickest LS powered car here on ht. You, Karl, and Jason have the fastest street hondas in this part of the country. 10's are definetly gonna be in your future!
