my buddie's em1...odd compression test results...what's the damage?
Friend of mine put on a revhard kit, fmu, and was "tuned" with a vafc. The car seemed to be running decently, he popped the hood the other day, and saw a steady stream of grey smoke coming out of his valve cover breather. The car has been running fine, he's stayed out of boost, but is a little worried. Here's the situation:
I finally got a chance to meet up with him and we proceeded with a compression test.
#1 - 205 #2 - 205 #3 - 205 # - 145
I added some oil in cylinder #4, and the compression didn't increase/decrease at all. According to the Haynes, if it were the ringlands and/or rings, the compression would increase, if there was no increase possible causes were said to be valve seals or headgasket.
The headgasket is fine, and the plugs are burning semi-decently. He hasn't talked to who "tuned" the car, I'm just trying to help him out with some insight. People I've talked to have been very quick to jump to the conclusion that a ringland failure is going on....I just want some other opinions.
Thanks

Re: (Hybrid93Eg)
so would it be correct to assume nothing to do with the pistons? from the beginning i've been leaning away from that, as there is not a huge amount of fact to back it up.
he's scheduled for a leakdown test tomorrow so..
thanks everyone

My experience and knowledge says its nothing to do with the pistons, rings, or cylinder walls.

I say a burned exhaust valve.
but yeah, do a leakdown and see if you hear anything from the intake, exhaust, or from adjacent cyls.
if you hear anything from the intake or exhaust, you have a burned/bent/damaged valve. if you hear it from an adjacent cyl, you most likely have a damaged headgasket that's leaking to other cyls.
