I'm not going to start pointing fingers until I am done pulling the head but I would like some other people's thoughts at this point. I'm pulling the head tonight so I start draining the coolant.

1) The coolant is just black as night
2) I'm finding SMALL metal shavings in the coolant
3) Lots of black stuff (probably burnt oil)

I wasn't going to be suprised if the head gasket was blown but now I am thinking other things. I lost the largest shaving while a buddy and I were looking at it. I will look for it in a little bit. My question is what are your thoughts with this little bit of information? I might have to call the company tomorrow if I find something I don't like tonight.

Maybe the waterpump just failed? Are the flakes aluminum?

i have flakes in my motor.
one of the trust washers was installed backwards. it was eaten up. spit out and i spun all the main bearings.. then all the metal imbedded itself into my pistons, so i lost all 4 pistons and one rod .. hope you have netter luck

hopefully your motor isnt ruined..

Thanks for the replies. I guess we will see tomorrow what I find. Damn noseeums were eating me alive tonight and I am working on four hours of sleep. Here are two pictures I took. There were a couple larger shavings but these pictures should be suffice.





The motor is a swap I bought from a company. I'm going to be mad as Hell if I have to ship it back to them next week.

You can't see but at the bottom there is shavings.

those almost look like shavings of a bearing, but how you shredded one i don't know. my guess is part of the sleeves since you have oil in your coolant. how did this happen?

This is how I got the motor. I bought the motor from a company a couple weeks ago. I was simply going to install a new head gasket, timing belt, ARP head studs and some other parts but it looks like that's not going to happen ... Again.

It's sitting on the engine stand. It hasn't made it into the chassis

now that i look at it the metal shavings look to be chunks, not slivers. did you check the valves? it could possibly be part of a vave. when you float a vave to the point of putting savings into the pan, you end up cracking a sleeve as well.

Thats the way it should be done.
Too many people will bash a company witout giving them a chance
to correct their problems. It always sucks when something like this happens
though, sorry about your engine. By all means let us know if they give you
a hard time about it.

I agree. People are not robots and mistakes can happen. Not to mention the guy I dealt with didn't try to rush things to get to other calls. He was very friendly.

From day 1 I was sure the head gasket was blown (which I have no problem with) but it's a little bit more than that.

I just want what I paid for. A B18b in good condition. This one isn't in good condition.

You don't have to hide the company you bought that engine off of, Because you already posted it a while back. You bought it off of IAS. Well I hope they take care of you. Which I know they will.

Good luck with 'em, I'm sure they will take care of you. After trying for about a month to get a decent b18b longblock from they(they didn't have any in stock, so I'd call weekly when the new shipments came in) I ended up going with Sohfast, but after seeing how IAS treats their customers I will always try to use them first. Very friendly guys, tough to get ahold of because they are so busy, but they are a stand up business

I was almost in a similar situation with the metal shavings thanks to the work of a "company" but I got lucky. They screwed up the piston to wall clearances (ridiculously close) and I had to send it to Endyn to have it fixed. While fixing it they were kind enough to clean out all the metal shavings that the initial place left in the block. That is a pretty crappy "present" if you ask me.

In any case, this should be a warning to all- thoroughly clean your oil and water passages whenever you've had machine work done on your block.

he meant 'thrust washer'. It keeps the crank from sliding end to end like when the clutch pushes against it.
