Max power on stock rods?
How much power will the stock rods take on a B16a1? i getting some 9or9.1:1 pistons but have run out of money so can not afford to get rods. What sort of power will they hold safely. I know people tend to say 300 is the max on a stock B16a1 but is that the figure before the ring lands crack or are the rods getting near the limit at that?

Well tuned they could go up in the high 300's.
But if you are building for that much power you CAN afford rods. |
Re: Max power on stock rods? (ogabudiah)
well im looking at running no more than 300 really as this is a dailey driver and in sunny old england its hard to get the power down now and its only 225 ish.

Re: Max power on stock rods? (crispydee)
If your taking a motor completely apart and taking the time to install new pistons there is no excuse to not spend $300 or less for a good set of rods to complete the setup. If you can't afford it now then just wait a while till you can afford it.

Re: Max power on stock rods? (nsxmatt)
true but by the time ive paid for them and the shipping then the duty its like $450. If the standards rods or ok at 300bhp is it really worth changing them? i suppose its piece of mind. If a good set of second hand rods where to come up i would probably have them.

Re: Max power on stock rods? (crispydee)
With good tuning you can hit 300whp on stock rods and pistons, many people have. With a bad tune you could detonate once at 180whp and say by to it all.

I predict a ported block or oil pan failure with the stock rods. |

they have to be for a b16.......all the other rods are different lengths. BTW spend the money on rods because your motor is only as strong as the weakest part. Also if you only want 300whp leave the motor stock https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Re: Max power on stock rods? (civicflnum1)
thing is that i want it to be safe and reliable which is why i want the pistons. i have NOS aswell but dont run it since ive been boosted so if i had pistons and rods i could run 300 and like a 30-50 shot for the track

Re: Max power on stock rods? (crispydee)
IF IM NOT MISTAKEN I THINK I SEEN 500WHP ON STOCK SLEEVES BUT I THINK THE RODS ARE STOCK TO.I ALSO HERD THAT 300 WAS MAX FOR B SERIES BUT JUST CHECK OUT SOME DYNO SHEETS.

i have made 310 whp and 210 trq. on a 170,000 mile BONE STOCK LS/vtec . https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif at DO IT DYNO .. Bubba Tuned

I'd like to see your dyno figures and compression # at 180,000. i once ran a stock block/internals setup at 12 psi and layed down 296 whp. the car ran good and strong, for about a summer. by September i had no-more ring lands left. but although the rods showed signs of overheating, they were still quite intact. you could have your stock rod's shotpeined, or cryoed, but if you replace them altogether, you (99% of the time) wont have to worry about them again ( under 18 psi).
