Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
Update: I had a thought regarding the turbo build. I’m looking into camshafts right now and I have people telling me to drop the new cams in while I have the motor open and I have people telling me to wait and pick my cams when I’m ready to I install my turbo. I even know mechanics who are telling me to install the cams now while I have it open. My question is can stage 2 turbo cams run efficiently on a NA setup before the turbo? Crower particularly. Found only one person talk about this in one post and they said it would be fine. Just wanted the opinion of others. Not looking to add power while NA, but I just wanna know, would it be alright? I’m partially asking because I also want to upgrade the valvetrain so I need to be sure if I’m going to get these turbo cams
much thanks

You'll be fine putting in the Crower B18B1 Stage 2 turbocharger cams (404s, IIRC). Just keep the cams at stock points and make sure to account for their behaviour in any basemaps you may load to get the car to run effectively. Once you've finished engine break-in and installed your turbocharger, Get it tuned.

I was thinking more so the 403s. Or are those the all motor? I’m just hoping 404s won’t kill my driveability without the turbo lol i’m presuming that there might be some sort of shift in power as well. Will I be losing power or will it just be moved higher in the power band?

I believe the 403s were all-motor. If you're concerned about the camshaft while staying NA. Get the cams for later, and run OEM until you're ready to cross over. You don't put turbo cams in an NA car just to save time. The duration is longer than OEM, and may have some undesired results

this thread hurts to read. its literally the most overbuilt 250hp car ever. i wish i had some advice or something constructive to add, but im sure you would ignore it and go looking for the next part thats designed for 500-700 hp lol.

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
lol I understand that. It’s just that I’m preparing it for when I wanna boost it for more later. Especially if this is my daily. The only reason I’m asking about cams is because I wanna upgrade my valvetrain but I know it’s not entirely recommended if you aren’t upgrading the cams, but I just don’t wanna have crappy cams? lol trust me I wanna go for the most mild build I can but I also don’t wanna replace everything in the next year or so. Especially if I’m gonna up boost it higher. If you have some input then throw it out there. Nothing is etched in stone besides internals

Edit: valvesprings are well worth the money. Ls springs are very weak and my supertechs saved my motor when i 3-4-3 shifted a few months ago

I've know Howard and Brad for years. Knows his stuff. I agree he cams were the limiting factor there on 93 octane. However, with a race fuel/blend you could have turned it up and made more with same cams. Back on topic.

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
All of this being said, what do you think I should do about valvetrain? Idk if you caught it earlier in the thread, but this motor has over 330k+ miles on it, hence the rebuild. If you think the cams will suffice, then what should I do about the valves and springs? As I’ve stated before, the main reason I’m looking to replace the camshafts is because I have people suggesting against valvetrain without matching cams. If that weren’t the case, I wouldn’t replace the camshafts unless they were damaged or worn somehow. I was thinking about getting some dual springs, new retainers possibly titanium, and one of the established valve brands, probably crower or supertech. If I can get a mild upgrade for valvetrain that will match stock cams then my problem is solved

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
i would get some springs and use oem retainers if youre on a budget or matching brand retainers if you have the money. im using supertech 77lb springs with titanium retainers and im very happy with them. not too expensive and im using oem b18b cams at the moment. springs and head studs are my only mods and ive been at 320whp for over a year now and havent had a single engine issue. im very glad i got springs too. i can turn 7500 rpm, banging on the rev limiter, worry free. i can honestly say they saved my motor too, great investment regardless of cam choice or power level on b18a/b engines.

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
There's nothing wrong with using oem cams with aftermarket springs/valves/retainers, etc, lots of people do. On vtec motors, its not as necessary because the factory springs are stiffer and are capable of supporting 8-8.5k rpm but with nonvtec engines, its almost necessary, in my opinion. I have dual springs.

Re: Matteggy's B18b1 Turbo Build- What are the advantages of Boring out the cylinder?
With that many miles on the car, you're planning on taking the head to a shop, right? They should inspect all the components for wear. If your OEM valves aren't worn, you can have them do a valve job to refresh the valves you already have. Definitely have the head cleaned, resurfaced, and new seals put in. Unless you just want to replace components, you'll probably be fine with OEM at your goals. Updating the springs would be a good idea if you want to increase RPM beyond stock.
