Default manual timing? "tuning"

I found a part that would allow me to set timing in (+-)1 deg increments from stock. could something like that be used for tuning or would i still need to go with fill engine management?

Its not MSD but it is on a bike. the part is made by factory Pro

"This is the patented Factory Pro Adjusted Ignition rotor.
Patented for it's absolute 1 degree indexing ability - without trying to read inaccurate "hash" marks like other adjustable advancers AND the unique internal adj. screw - there are NO exposed screws to loosen and fall out inside the engine like ALL other adjustable ignition rotors!
(We aren't falling for the other adj. ign. rotor manufacturer's "Loc-Tite the adjustment screws so they don't fall out..." suggestion!"

So it just does +- 1 degree or more?

Purchase a full EMS and don't look back on band-aid units.

im not 100% sure on bikes timing setup, but i do know there isnt a diostro.

And for a bike that isnt turbo, i would say this and a commander would be all u need to get the max power out of ur bolt on upgrades.

Not a band aid.

EDIT. I am retarded.

But I would still say a power comander (?) or something similar for tuning. The shop I use just got a bike dyno, so this is something i am just starting to get into but am less than knowledgable in.

OK so here it is, the bike is a 2003 CB919 its got a 10.8:1 CR which is kinda low for a street bike. I dont know how many of you remember the 900RR, this is the same engine from that bike but with a lower compression. Also, the 919 now has fuel injection and smaller cams which make it a bottom end beast.

A power commander is basically a SAFC that is tuned via USB port.

So you guys think it would workout ok? how much does the timing get retarded in a tune? if this part allows me to go up to 10 deg would that be enough?

Rule of thumb .75 degree's per psi of boost. Fuel uses, bore size, etc all plays a factor though.

No, don't run that unit. On obd1 distributor's you can already adv/ret your base timing.

Ok, so what would be a good ECU to use? I am using individual throttle bodies and it is on a bike.

Well if this is for a bike and there is no question about FI, why is it in the FI section? I'd imagine you'd get more experienced opinions about this over there.

yeah but 99% of the guys in there ride on a track so I though the FI page would be better.
