Main Bearing Failure; almost carnage, engine guru's please look at pix.
hey guys. I was at the track makin some passes & after one of my passes i noticed low oil pressure. I then switch my tires back over & went home, didn't wanna abuse it any furter. The low oil pressure was due to the increased clearances on my main bearings. I'm just trying to figure out what caused the mains to get squished like this.
Any information is helpful. I can take more pix of stuff if need be.
The center main was the worst.
I'm throwin in a new crank & a fresh set of ACL bearings to resolve this for now, but i really would like to figure out how this happened so that i can make sure it doesn't happen again.
Setup:
Dart Block 2.0
Eagle crank / rods
CP 9.0:1 Pistons
Dart Head (oversized valves, full valve train, stock GSR cams)
Garrett t3/t4 (.60/.63)

what brand and weight of oil were you using? did all the other bearings look okay? or was it just thins one single bearing?
that groove in the middle on the far is edge is what has me.
have you ever strained your oil when you changed it?
any trash or debris in the pickup of the pump or in the pan, other than what was from the bearing?

Only debris in the pan was a bunch of bearing material. I've run both 10w30 synthetic and 10w40 conventional in this motor. It's only got about 1600 miles on it at this point.
There was a couple chunks of bearing stuck in the pick-up screen but nothing that would stop it from suckin up oil. I strained the oil the last change at 1000 miles and everything was clean. I use a paint strainer for my spray gun. It's extreamly fine.

eagle crank was new from a few years ago. Those were clevite bearings. i believe clearances were .0015 on all.
Crank was indeed checked for balance and straightness.
I'm gonna plasti-gauge the new stuff tomarrow and i'll let you guys know the results.

how does your crank look? pics of the journals? looks like it would have some bad scarring on the journals if the bearings look like that

ive heard horror stories about eagle cranks. how they still have some debri in the oil control holes and ive seen a few pix of them that have snapped and caused some serious carnage.

Was plasti-gauge all you used to check the clearances when you assembled the motor, or did you actually mic the journals and main caps?

gonna try & answer all these questions. Sorry if i miss anyone, i've been swamped with work & havne't had a chance to get back to my motor.
I can tell you that the new crank along with the ACL bearings will not be able to just go in there due to the clearances being to tight on the mains.

crank would probly need turned to be usable again.

that was not the issue, this crank was cleaned thouroly before use and there wasn't anything in it anyways.

yes, plasti gauge was all i had as a referance. I've since purchased a mic. I hope to continue to improve my tooling. Workin with what i have.. ya kno.

You have to make the oil passages rediculously clean when assembling. I'm sure you know, but especially with aftermarket cranks/blocks, you have to REALLY clean those passages, check & recheck. It doesn't take much to start eating a bearing. If you have some old, oddball unused bearings, sprinkle a few specs of dust on them & torque it down. You will see the indentations in the top bearing layer where each particle fell.
Outside of that, I'd say it may have had help from running the motor [hard] w/o oil at running temp, or letting it sit for a long time. With a loose motor, there's a chance too much seaped out while it sat, removing the critical protection at & right after startup. They make oil pump primer sticks for most V8's for a reason.

Regardless mine is to tight to re-assemble being slightly tighter than .001 So i'm going to be talking to my machineist today about an align bore and giving him the bearings that i'm planning to use so that he can generate the correct clearances.

I was once told that prolonged detonation or a misfire could lead to squished bearings...
