Default LS tranny vs. GSR tranny time slips

For those of you who have turbochraged LS engines and have ran both transmissions. What was your best time with each transmission and mph. I know the GSR is the better transmission for racing at the track but how much better is it?

Alot of the drag guys run b16 trannys in their turbo cars. Like jason hunt, courtney green and Ron Sudol. They say that running the b16 is better because if you want longer gears you can always put on larger tires. And at the track, 9500rpms and 25" slicks with a LS tranny you can do over 200mph - totally useless in the 1/4 (in most of our cars anways). The b16a just fits the hondas powerband better. Keeps the car in the powerband...which is what you need. LS is just too long.

The B16a tranny does not fit the LS powerband.. The LS does not rev like a GSR or B16 motor. In order to achieve MPH w/ the lower rev limit you have to run a taller gear.

I had the GSR tranny and I also had the LS.. Ive discussed this a few times but I will again.. Revving to 7500rpm's(which is about the highest rpm a stock LS motor will maintain acceleration) and using a 23" tall tire(about stock) I was able to achieve 114mph @ the absolute top of my 4th gear.. The car trapped 109-110mph in the 1/4 and I was having to shift into 5th before the traps..(trap speed is avg. of last 66ft.) The car weighed 2620 and made 260whp @ that time.. It WAS DEFINITLY faster w/ the GSR tranny. It did accelerate faster, but heres the thing, if I would have lightened the car up more, or added more HP, I would have raised my trap speed and would have had to use even more of my 5th gear in the 1/4.. Racing in 5th gear doesn't improve your 1/4 time.. It just cancels out the good accleration you did in the earlier gears..

I know most of you LS guys out there asking yourself GSR or LS tranny??; are running pretty similar set ups to what I had. A b16 tranny would have been retarted for this combination. Id need a 26" tire to make it work.. I wouldn't reccomend a GSR tranny for every LS guy and I wouldn't reccomend the LS tranny to every LS guy either, you need to look at the tire you are running and about the trap speed you expect and how high you rev the engine to come up w/ the right combination of gears..

I agree. its more then just a GSR vs LS. it tire size, HP, and weight of the car makes a big diffrence. there really isn't much diffrence between a LS with a 22" tire and a GSR with a 24.5" tire.
for high power, lite weight cars use either a LS w/22" slicks or a GSR w/24.5" slicks.
you need to try it and see what works for your setup. as a rule you want to hit the traps at the top of fourth gear in the quarter.

LS is better because the gears are longer HAHAHAHA I believe a B16 will wind out too quick and need a motor that revs higher.
