LS tranny or shorter geared tranny i.e. b16 or b18
ok heres the thing: i want to turbo my ls mostly for drag. i have been arguing that the ls tranny would be good for the turbo to give it time to spool. my bro on the other hand tells me that a shorter geared tranny such as the b16 will be better. what are people's experiences with this? also will one tranny be better on everyday driving than the other? thank you for looking.

ive got a b16a in my civic wid a 18g and a ls tranny... my cuz'n told me to keep the b16 tranny cuz the shorter gears will make me run better at the track... what i want to do is take the 5th gear outta the ls tranny and put it in the b16 ..so i can go 160 +

thats the thing im looking into. the longer gearing of the ls supposedly works well with the turbo because it lets it spool more...or somthine like that...i can understand the shorter gearing of the b16 though but at what cost to the turbo performance?

i'm in the process of putting in a b16 tranny w/LSD because my ls tranny's 3rd gear is screwed and i don't feel like fixing it. i'll tell you what it's like. i'm sure i'll get faster acceleration but at what cost? and i'm sure 1st and 2nd gear will be useless to me due to my torque. my ls 1st and part of 2nd is already useless at the moment. what i was thinking of actually doing was using the LS final drive along with 5th gear into the b16 tranny but i'm not sure if this will work.

LMAO^
Some one please do a before and after test on this in the 1/4m to proove that the b16 tranny would produce a quicker ET... It may not be more street friendly but...if 1/4 is what your after

shorter gears = faster period.
shorter gears= faster acceleration.
dont believe anything else.

Actually, the opposite is true. Think about 1g DSMs, if you will. 5sp turbos used 14bs whereas the automatics used 13bs. Why? Longer gearing means lower rpm at any given speed. Lower rpm means less exhaust. Less exhaust means less "power" to the turbo.
Saying that longer gearing will help because of traction is a rather circular argument. It's like saying 20" rims help traction, or that an LS-to-d15z1 swap will help traction. The problems are still there, and they're fixable. Making the car slower only makes it worse. Get slicks.
