Lower boost problem in 1st and 2nd gear.. what do you guys do.
Hey all now that im happy boosted, iv seen via datalogging on hondata that im not producing boost enough in 1st and 2nd gear, when going off hard from like the traffic lights.
My car pulls very hard in 3rd gear…running 7psi external wastegate. But hondata logger seems to only show maybe a max or 3psi or so when driving very hard off the line in 1st and 2nd gear.
Its like almost the engine rev’s out before the turbo has begun to even spin up… im guessing this is a form of turbo lag…
Would using a boost controller help fine tune this…or any other ideas ?
Mean while im using a 57 trim t3t4 turbo with a .63ar housing and in 3rd gear it hits full boost at around 4000rpm.
In the feature soon ill be running 18psi or so…when I finish my engine rebuild.

yeah thats on a b16....
well its what was recomended..from most people... for once i build my engine rods / pistons (9:1) and sleving my block.... and then run 18psi +

good boost controller will help solve this...i'm using the avcr which has a function that allow u to increase boost for each gear by using the start duty cycle

That's a whole lot of turbo for 7 psi. How long does it take you to spool that thing?

i have the same problem.....hardly registers boost in 1 and 2, but 3rd pulls like a bitch, but my problem is due to a leak out of my exhaust side of my t3super 60....i have now a flange to cover this flapper actuator, deesigned for an internal gate, where i am using a tial. so will see how it works out.

the turbo spins up by 4000rpm.. in 3rd seeing 7psi then.
humm yeah lets hope i can make it spin faster in the lower gears.. when i invest in a avc-r
its a large turbo.. bc when i increase it to 18psi or more.. i want the turbo to still give me a bang for my buck ! ehehe

I have the same turbo as you, but on an LS motor. How do you think I feel--full boost by 4000, but then i have to quickly shift at 7000. Thank god for hondata's redline, I would have grenaded my motor 50 times over by now since i bounce off the limiter all the time.
Anyways, just yesterday I upped the boost from the stock .45 bar spring (which showed about 5 psi on the crappy autometer boost controller) to about 8 psi with a boost controller I made myself.
It seems to spool a little faster. Before I would hear the wastegate open at 1 psi when running boost via its spring. Now I dont hear it open until 4-5 psi using my mbc.
But now between 2nd and 3rd it seems like im falling out of boost. Im not sure what it is, but Im almost posititve its because Im still using the factory intank pump.

everyone saying a T3/T04e 57trim stage 3 .63 is a "BIG" turbo has never seen a BIG! turbo!.. I have the same turbo on my B18B, and all my friends are running the same turbo as well on B18C's and CRvtec's..
I get full boost in 1st gear, in 2nd gear, in every gear... Im running LS tranny w/ a turbo XS mbc, sometimes boost even spikes in 1st and 2nd.. Im running a 2.5-3" turboback exhaust set up w/ no cat and the spool up is usually fully spooled by 3800rpm, and on a 5k rpm punch turbo lag does not even seem to exist.. The T3/T04e is NOT to big, that is not your problem, most likely its because of either 1)bottle neck exhaust system 2) lack of boost controller 3)1st gear is just too damn short.. I seriously doubt the T04e/T3 is too big for a B16A, there are Lots of people running this turbo and not having spool up problems.. Are u seeing full boost on your boost gauge? if so, then maybe your hondata needs to be recalculated..

Just wondering, but how does Hondata's redline, which is basically the same as stock (but adjustable) help you not grenade your motor from bouncing off the limiter?

I have the same trim turbo too and I love the sona ma biatch. It lag does not even cross my mind. I dunno if its the little bullet tip thing Majestic put on the compressor wheel to make it spool faster, but no complaints here. Just get the boost controller.
