Default just got new plugs, but confused about the gap

Hey all, I've been running my stock plugs since the spring on my 98 Civic EX with greddy sohc turbo.. running 5.5lbs of boost. I JUST finally got some
NGK 2975 ZFR7F-11 plugs. I have the MSD6BTM with blaster2 coil and MSD Cap & wires.

I talked to the guy @ CDE where I bought the plugs and he said that they are pre-gapped to specs, but when I checked the gap, they're .045. Isn't that a little large to put in my car??? I was thinking more like .035

What do people think for my set up? Also, how do I regap them? I have 'The Gapper'.. do I just use pliers?

Thanks for the input!

I'm sorry, I don't mean to flame you, but how do you maage to handle your car if you can't even gap a spark plug. I don't want to sound like a dick, so please don't take it that way. If you have a gap gauge then that is what you use. You don't want to use pliers or something like that to change the spacing on the electrode, if you crimp or scar the electrode it will screw up the plug.

Well as far as a gapper I use a universal, same **** as any, the round one, about a buck from any autoparts and lightly tap it down but not to close up the gap and gap it from there. 10 minutes tops for all this but you may want to gap the plugs at about .28 or .30 with the msd coil and ignition. well, i'm just being honest...

i do work on my car a little bit.. but gapping plugs is something i've never had experience with.

I do have the gap gauge, and i understand how to use it to OPEN the gap, but how do i use it to close the gap?

sorry if this is such a newbie question.. but i'd figure i'd rather get flamed then do it wrong

Just tap the plug against something hard to close the gap. But dont tap too hard
or else it will close all the way.

yah i would gap it at .35

spark plug gapping is easy. all u need is that gap tool and make sure the tip is touching the desired measurement.

Spark plug gap plays a small role in specific output (hp/tq) so don't take it too lightly.

General rule, is you want to run the biggest gap you can without the engine missing at high rpm. If you have an aftermarket ignition, you can (sometimes) open the gap bigger.

Your compression plays a role in how big you can go so keep that in mind. If you are stock compression, and stock ignition, run stock gap (0.044")

My bad - forgot i was in the FI forum.

Since you are boosted, you will have to run a smaller plug gap since its harder for the spark to jump across the higher the cylinder pressures get.

If you have the time, the same rule I mentioned above applies. Start at 0.032" or so and drive the car. If it doesn't miss, increase the gap 0.002" at a time until it starts to miss up top and then close it down 0.002"

That will be the most optimum plug gap at that boost level until you can get on a dyno and verify it.
