Just got my turbo setup, Need some help! (with pics)
Hey everyone. I'm Matt. I have a 95 civic EX. First my question, then my setup.
I got an EBAY T3, supposedly off an early ninety's SAAB. It's marked Garret AiResearch M27. Does anyone know anything about this compressor? I can't find info ANYWHERE. I want to know where it makes power, and where it runs out! I can't even figure out the A/R ratios~!
My setup (being installed the 19th by meeee) as follows:
-Garret AiReaserch T3 M27 as mentioned above: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1873105364
-Apexi AFC (for afc hack), dsm 2nd gen 450cc's, and resistor box: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1873976167
-Injectors: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1873057029
-DRAG manifold (going to block off external wastegate flange if I can figure out how)
-Intercooler that I'm going to make work as a FM somehow: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...873423954&rd=1
-Super-Ghetto BOV : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1874456921
-Autometer Ultralite Boost + A/F Gauges and Pillar Pod
-Did I leave anything out? Anyone like it? Anyone think I can make it work? I am going to have to custom-fab all charge pipes out of I have no Idea what, and I don't know how to get a downpipe made... But I'm going to figure it all out TOMMOROW! (i'm going home, finals are over, parts stacked up in my room!)
Wish me luck, Opinions, Help, Advice, even critisizm is welcome! Anyone in CT wanna come help??

As far as the charge piping goes, do what I (and many other people on this board) did and go to JCwhitney and by mendral bent pipe bends so that you can cut and fit it yourself. It's not that hard. I'm doing mine out for 4 2" 180 degree bends
Link for that: http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jht...=14721&BQ=jcw2
For the downpipe, you could either buy a prefabricated one and customize it to fit, buy some more pipe bends from JCWhitney and make it your self, or go to any decent muffler shop and have them make it for you once you've got the turbo on the car (Don't worry about running without a Downpipe on the way there, it's just loud)
How are you going to lubricate it? You need to get some oil lines to go from the block to the turbo - check this thread out for that, it's pretty helpful https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=232145
I'm pretty sure that the Turbo you've got is a 40trim T3, the A/R's are like .42/.48 or something around there. Here's the compressor map for it though- http://www.turboneticsinc.com/comp_maps/fig1.html
and here's how to read compressor maps - https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=233598
To block off your external wastegate flange, just get some thick sheet metal, drill two bolt holes in it, and bolt it on where the wastegate would go.
And last but not least, here are two kick *** links

Hope all this helps

Most kick *** reply I've seen yet. So, does anyone know how this turbo matches with a D16z6? Is this a low spool torque turbo, a high hp turbo (for a d16) or a nice compromise?
Thanks for all the links... I've been reading alot the past few months in prep for this, and on the oil line subject, I'm gonna wing it somehow (about to read the link you left me). Again, I really appreciate all the time you spent replying! It was a most AWESOME post!

Heh heh heh, glad you like it. It's nice to know that the hundreds of hours I've spent learning on this is doing something besides draining my wallet on my own car...
Anyway, you can do the oil lines pretty cheap if you know where to get good deals. A lot of people on this board get REALLY expensive earl's fittings and such, which are all fine and good, but cost an arm and a leg. I bought my entire feed setup from here: http://www.secureperformanceorder.co...6&CategoryID=3 - just get the steel braided hose (3an would probably be best for you setup) and the "brake" fittings at the top of the page. Don't let the fact that the parts are labeled for brake use, they're the exact same thing, only cheaper. I've been using them for 3 months now, without any trouble.
That turbo's a pretty small T3, but the D16 is a small engine. Overall, I'd say its a pretty good match, it should spool up quickly and give you some nice mid range power, with decent high end gains, but don't take my word on it, I'm really more of a B-Series guy.
***Correction*** I just noticed that on the link I gave you the 3an steel braided lines only go to 24inches, and that's going to be two short. With that in mind, I'd just go with 4an. You should be fine, it's what I'm using, and we've got very similar center housing.

Re: Just got my turbo setup, Need some help! (johnisenglish)
Glad to hear, I'm looking for oil return fittings as we speak, and a downpipe, prefab. I was thinking about ghetto-rigging it with a huge piece of flex tubing on the way to the muffler shop... But you don't think I need to? I'm just intimidated by the idea of making my own piping. Did you look at the link for the pic of the intercooler I got? What do you think my chances are of making that work?

Re: Just got my turbo setup, Need some help! (Johnyquest)
With that intercooler I'd cut down and block off the stock pipes, and put new pipes on the side. Otherwise fitment is gonna be a bitch. It's not that hard, I did it with my Starion IC, here's a link to the thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=358256
You might also want to do a seach on Starion IC's, because there are a lot of threads out there about doing that sort of thing
Don't worry about running open down pipe. You could really do it all the time, it'd just be really loud, but there'd be no real mechanical set back. If nothing else, it'll decrease spool time and you'll be making more power earlier. If I were you I'd just do that and go to a muffler shop to have them make one for you. You will probably need a flange that you can bolt on to the exhaust housing of the turbo, I'd check http://www.turbo-performance.com for that, more specifically this one http://www.turbo-performance.com/Pro...e-internal.JPG

One thing missing from you list is an intank fuel pump .. there is a group buy going on by Lightning... go hit him up....hth
ps some ngk plugs, and maybe a btm too while you are at it... the afc hack runs max + timing around full boost so be careful

No-- I'm not missing the fuel pump... I may have forgot to list it though. I installed a walbro intank HP 255lph yesterday. I'm just waiting on my afc. I just hope this micro-turbo can boost my motor!

"A set of four(4) black top 450cc injectors. These were pulled from my 1996 eagle talon tsi front wheel drive manual turbo in working condition with aprox 55K miles."
i was under the impression that only the 1g manual turbo dsm injectors were 450s...??

Re: Just got my turbo setup, Need some help! (SpoolinLS)
no, they are 450's for sure, it says right on them. I'm having hell trying to get them to run! Every time I get it to idle nicely, it hesistates when I try to rev it. It just started blowing black smoke (too rich??) when I rev and popping, so that's my guess. When I lean it out to where it doesn't blow black smoke, my A/F gauge reads blank (which is wayyy lean) at idle. It goes good @ full throttle, but i'm not sure where to tune it to. Should I tune it to run stoich or a little rich (like it used to run with the stockers at full throttle?) Also, how bad is it for the car to be lean at idle? Does lean only damage the motor under load, or all the time?
Any tuning advice would help, I'm having a lot of trouble here!
