Default Just bought some turbo parts, have a few questions.

Hey guys, If you reply thanks alot!

Heres my deal. I was going to install a supercharger on my b18, decided that for me it would be cheaper and more effective too get boost via turbo and picked up some dsm 450s with clips and a b-series blox turbo manifold with a t3 flange for 200 bucks.

My motor is has ITR pisons installed with a non-vtec head. Compression according to most of the online calculators is around 10.8 to 11:1. It currently has Crower 404's and head work. So I know it will make some good power on little boost.

6-8 psi is what I had in mind. I've done some research and came too the conclusion that that will be somewhat safe (hopefully) on 93 with a good tune.

My concerns are here...and these questions are coming about because I have no boost experience.

1. What causes a car to overboost or spike? becuase If it does im sure the engine will no agree with it. and what can I doo to prevent it from happening.

2. Ive read that boost is different from volume of air. So, a T70 at 7 psi will theoreticly produce more power than a 14b at 7 psi. am I correct?

With that will a t3/t4 hybrid be overkill? Id like too have boost at around 2500 and pull too 8.5k.

Those are the two main questions I have in mind right now. If you could when replying give some pretty good detail so I can understand better.

1. the wastegate controls the boost. When my turbo b16 blew few years ago, it was due to a vaccum line slipping off the WG and it just shut. spiking to hell. also look out for boost controlers.

2. yes yo are correct a "smaller turbo" will make less HP than a "bigger turbo" at the same psi. BUT a smaller turbo will reach max boost faster than a bigger turbo, but will not be as efficiant in the upper rpm's.

a t3/t4 is not over kill but you will not reach max boost at 2500 thats for sure. maybe 4000-4500

hope this helps you out a little?

Thanks man.

I knew the wastegate controls the boost.

So, basically If I have any vacume leaks it will boost spike? That's crazy, that would really suck. I would really make sure that I install all the hoses brand new and get a vacume guage.

If your going the turbo route, most boost gaues show a vacuum reading as well

well im not sure 100% but i think it depends where the vacuum leak is. from my experiance the vacuum line came off directly at the wastegate. i would think the outcome woutld be different if somewhere else? or maybe i just dont know?

anybody want to enlighten me?

ya you are correct. if you do some research, there are these things called pop off valves, they work like BOV's they open once a certain psi is met and release excess air. now this is not to replace but just as a safety precaution incase the wasgete fails. search button is your friend

you can even make them out of a radiator cap, no vacuum source. will always work...
