Junkyard turbo Justy build.
Should be fun for turtle racing riced Saturns, Civics, Neons, and V6 F-bodies. Less than $500 spent, includes the car itself.
All wrenching and ghetto fabrication was performed by Crazy Dave Reilly.
Some of the wiring was performed by me, under duress, and against my
will. I did, however, voluntarily fill an 1/8" NPT <--> 1/4" flare
adapter with brazing rod to make an oil restrictor, as playing with
fire is fun.
We had a bottom end donated to us by a local engine importer... actually, a whole carby EJ12 engine, we just had to swap the EFI head onto it. The local Subaru dealer, Prestige, was kind enough to give us the headgasket + spark plugs at wholesale. I'm using the word "us" a little too freely... I donated the radiator (Suzuki Swift GTi unit) and about $40 in parts by way of an xmas gift, and I added some smartassed commentary interspersed with very little solid advice (mostly parroting stuff I learned HT about how important VTEC is) along the way, so I'm kinda tagging along on something that is 93% someone else's work.
Particulars are:
IHI RHB5 from 80-something Scooby DL wago @ 6.5 psig
Ford browntop 35# injectors (350cc, you ricers)
MAPhack box (ghetto AFC)
DSM SMIC
Tubular manifold made from headers found @ Biltmore Scrap Metal and Iron
$20 -4 AN oil feed lines... bling spec hydraulic hose w/ Earl's Flameguard.
Suzuki Swift GTi radiator
Custom plenum riser
Car started as ECVT, is now manual transmission. Probably the only turbocharged Justy in the world, is defintely the only 5 spd Justy with halfshaft + equal length (front) drive axles on the planet. Future plans include 40 mpg, daily driver, and an upgrade to a Megasquirt standalone. Since the block is solid deck iron, the rods look as stout as LS units (compared to the Spec-V jokes I was looking at last night... pathetic) I'm going to try to talk Dave into some higher boost.
http://www.redpepperracing.com/gallery/TurboJusty for the rest of the pictures.
Can anybody suggest a Scooby site I should post this to? Some of the Scooby boys might like to see it for a laugh.

The problem with an EJ20 in a Justy is making it fit... there is literally no room. :/
I'm wondering how closely related the EJ12 and other Scooby engines are, there might be some cheap turbo Scooby internals that we can stuff in this thing.

You are mentally ill, Rob. While I won't deny Dave has world-class Rally driver skills, I dislike drifting nose heavy Civics over top of blind hills and around wierdly cambered curves at 70 mph. Everyday. Everywhere he goes. You saw how he was with an actually fast car, like the Merkur.

That is such a good idea! Somebody write a letter to Subaru and tell them we want a car with AWD and a TURBO! And maybe like 227HP... and we could get Lance Armstrong to do the commercials... Oh yeah, I'm a genius...

I hope you don't think living 37 miles from Import ******* Salvage is a good thing... although Speedy's *is* a wonderful place, they carry ABSOLUTELY NOTHING DOHC VTEC.
And, yeah, I sling a lot of stuff cheap/free for locals.

Listen here ********, you didn't specify what you meant: Thus leaving yourself wide open. I jumped all over the opportunity. Do yourself a favor, and never ever come to kills. On another note, if you feel the need to attempt to converse further, PM me, or someone who cares. I have too much respect for Mr. Davis to jack his thread any further.

Re: Junkyard turbo Justy build. (J. Davis)
Hello Jdavis,
I know something like this is probably an easy build for you and all but will you make this for other Subaru Justy owners as well? I've always wanted a turbocharged Subaru Justy. Even have talked to my wife about it but she just laughed. I don't own a Justy but would consider getting one if someone made a turbokit for it. I wanted to PM you on this but didn't see the PM button.
If you are willing to make additional turbo 'kits', please let me know. Thank you!
BTW: Here's another guy that did work like you did.

I also wanted to add that the guys at the USMB (Ultimate Subaru Message Board) would love to hear/read of your project. I posted there the pics you put up about your project to put the 'bug' out. I can't stop thinking about it.

Re: Junkyard turbo Justy build. (J. Davis)
You can post it on nabisco http://www.nasioc.com It is the most active subie board.
Too bad you are in nc, I would race you in my 98 saturn sc2
Even though I am sure I would get owned. That car can't weigh more than 1700 pounds or so. Hopefully you can talk someone into a free dyno run.
BTW, it was not until the early 90's when the entire subaru lineup became awd.

Nonsense, I love the old thread hijack. Flame away, it saves me having to poke around to see a good argument.

I think the Justy weighs closer to 2000-2100, I could be wrong though.
I am fairly sure that '95 was the last year Subaru offered 2WD "as an option."

J. Davis, that fake SAFC rocks.
We're running one on another turbo project (Acclaim with a 16g). It's cool to see that I'm not the only geek to think of ways not to use a SAFC.

Re: Junkyard turbo Justy build. (J. Davis)
Sweet! People said I was crazy when I mentioned the concept of a turbo'ed Justy... LOL
I see you are a local, too (I live in the Hendersonville area).
If you do post this on NASIOC, you may want to hit up the SouthEast forum on there too...I'm sure some of the locals would love to see this beast. Better yet, bring it out to one of the Asheville area Highlands autocrosses at Biltmore Square Mall or the WNC Ag Center (the schedule is on their website @ http://www.highlandssportscarclub.com).

I just looked up the specs on the justy. With awd and cvt the car weighs in at a hefty 1930 pounds. Since you have a manual and fwd it is probably high 1700 to low 1800's. Two bad I already have 2 cars. I am sure if you rebuild the engine you can run some insane boost on a closed deck iron block.

Not necessarily! It has more people but Joe would/will get a better response at the USMB site I provided. NASIOC is geared more to the new age subaru folks while the USMB is geared to the older subarus.
