Default JG EdelBrock Turbo coming for the D16Y8?

hey guyz, if any of u have the sport compact issue the newest one (well at least here in kansas, with the red supra burning out) you might have seen the turbo kit from JG edelbrock, t28, 6psi, carb legal, tial BOV, a ni-cast turbomanifold, a jg performer X intake manifold, with extra fuel injectors electronically controlled for boost, spearco intercooler... and some other things... COMPLETE KIT, well for one theres no price quite yet, it comes out spring 03, but i have the Y7 engine... will this kit work for me, cuz i was going to get the 92-95 greddy kit, for like 1800, and that was for the ex and i heard it works fine wiht my engine with a couple of mods... but im seening what needs to be done here, to make this turbo kit work, cuz i luv JG and espcially cuz there making **** for the D series engine... so if anybody knows anything about this let me know, im really looking foward to getting this kit when it comes out in spring.... later

The only thing that sux about the y7 is the shitty inverted intake manifold......I would swap the mani with an ex one so you wouldnt have to modify any piping. Better yet swap on a y8 head (you get vtec and a better minfold)

LOL...loves JG. Anyway, the Edelbrock kit already comes with a new intake manifold. Looks like the only thing you'll need to use it on a Y7 is an EX throttle body, or at least a rotor from one.

Swapping rotors (spring loaded cam shaped thingie that holdst the throttle cable) is a piece of cake. You'll need to retain the Y7 throttle body anyway because of the IAC valve.

I'm wondering if it'll be compatible with 92-95 EX's... Since people are always adapting the greddy kit, will it work in reverse? I beleive the d16y8 is identical to the z6 except for the fact that it's obd II??

Yep, you're right, and as the guy above mentioned, you'll need to keep the Y7 IACV which is mounted on the TB, whereas the Y8 IACV is mounted on the intake manifold. Good catch dude!

Now, if you swap on an EX head, you'd want the EX throttle body and ECU of course.

alright... first off, it comes with the intake manifold. 2nd if i had the mag right here with me, i would look at the pic, but wouldn't i be able to just get the throttle body from an EX instead... cuz if the iavc valve is on the intake manifold on an EX then it would be fine right..? by the way im still a nooB, what is a iavc valve? it duznt say that it comes with the oil cooler? should i get one of those or is that not really needed that badly, it comes with the lines and everything, just not the oil cooler. if it duznt come with the fuel rail and everything... before i throw that on my engine, should i upgrade the fuel rail, pressure regualtor, and filter... b4 i do that? or can i wait and then do it?

You won't need to upgrade and of the things you asked about.

Oil cooler - nice, but not necessary. I've got one in my car now so I can make sure the new engine and turbo last me at least a year

No, the IAC valves are different. Not only do they work differently, but the Y7 (and cars with auto trannys) come with a 3 wire version that mounts on the tb.

The Y8 with manual tranny comes with a 2 wire version that mounts on the intake manifold.

These two are absolutely not interchangable, there is no way to make the Y8 IACV work with the Y7 ECU. Believe me, I tried. When I swapped the Y8 head and intake onto my car, I ended up having to get the Y8 ECU also.

This is exactly what I did. The IAC valve issue was the most difficult part of the project. Of course, the rest was really easy...

Hatchblack, did you swap the transmission as well? I did, but I had no plans to go FI at the time so the performance increase was substantial but I've been wondering about possibly trying the Y7 tranny again. If you kept the Y7 tranny, how do you like it for FI?

IT SUCKED. I wanted the EX tranny bad, but even the EX is geared lower than the LS tranny. I couldn't justify the cost of swapping trannies and getting an LSD after all I had already spent. I got the GSR tranny to go with my B18B now

Can't wait to get it in! Sooo close!

Thanks! That's good to know... I wondered if I was missing something now that I'm boosted and I can run out of gears more easily. Yep, I think the Y7 tranny is total crap for NA. I dunno what Honda was thinking. My gas mileage actually *increased* after performing the EX tranny swap. I'm convinced that the Y7 tranny had my engine operating so far out of it's efficiency range that fuel economy was hurt as a result. 43 mph in first gear, 73 mph in second. Ridiculous.

Haha...there was some pretty bad lag trying to re-build boost from 1-2 and 2-3 also. I think it should be called Grand Canyon Wide gear ratio.

Sucks that you can't just drop a Muncie, Tremec, or top loader in there

I've heard rumors that's it's going to be in the $3k range; but it sounds to be a helluva kit.

Umm, I thought we already explained that you can swap the Y7 throttle body to the EX manifold. Since the IACV is ON the Y7 tb instead of the manifold, there are a couple of small ports you'll have to block off with RTV or whatever. It's not a difficult swap.

Yes, you'll need to get a throttle rotor from an EX. Weapon R was making some goofy replacement ones that would probably be easier to get than a stock one.

And who thinks this kit is expensive???

I think retail is supposed to be about $3500, which is what...$500 more than most other kits, but this one comes with numerous extras such as the intake manifold, 4 extra injectors, etc. But hey, if you like $3000 kits that come with an FMU and a piece of crap air filter, then ... well, I dunno
