Default JDM Type R Head Valve stem Hieght

Took my JDM Type R head down to the machine shop, for a valve job. He just called he said the valve stem height is not matching what he has in his book for a b16 head. The valve stems are sticking up to high. He said the only way to double check this is install the rocker arms with cams and make sure you have the proper valve adjustment values. At this point I told him just to cut the stem the same amount that was removed from the valve. This head came off a JDM B18C (yes that is the full engine code not a C1 not c5 just B18C)

anyone have any info on this?

A Type R is a Type R, JDM or otherwise. I betcha he's looking at a D16 head by mistake. There's no other info about this. The Type R head is based upon a stock B16 head core with just a hand blend of the bowl areas of the valve seat. that's it. He needs to look at either the B16 from the 99-00 or the actual Integra Type R helms book

You'll see what's discussed at 1:12.

Their description doesn't say specifically that it was a B16 engine, but it is common knowledge that the B16 cylinder head was used with the same valve stem height as the Type R, because they were the same valve. the difference was only the hand bowling of the valve seat.

Thanks this is exactly what I was thinking myself. I dont think he was confused he does alot of B series and he was asking me if it was a B16 head or a B18 head. I told Him it was a B16 head. However I did not want him to cut the valve stems down to far so he just cut down whatever he had cut off the valves. I will need to check the valve clearance when I get it back I suppose

But that's the point. When it comes to a B16 or B18C1/5. It doesn't matter. Circumstances change for the non-vtec heads.

ok thanks I was not sure that the GSR was the same I know there are some differences between them (b16 vs gsr). Im really not sure what the issue is I have never used the head before so I cant say what did or did not happen to it before it was mine. I do trust this machine shop and if anything hes making sure its gonna work rather then just putting it back together as is. I can post back with results next week im not able to pick it up until then. I will be checking valve lash and making sure I can get it to within spec correct?

It may be that wherever you got this head had been previously altered?

Valve stem length is the same from B16 to GSR to ITR. If the machinist says that the stem length is too long, it has more to do with either the valve seats being machined too deep OR the valve margin has been cut too thin. Cutting the valve stem length is a last resort option.

Yes it had skunk2 retainers and springs other then that I dont know. But it came with original cams (ones they were using and rocker arms) so whatever height it was set at should work
