Default jdm b16a obd1 vs. jdm b18b obd2

I had a turbo'd b16 with a .57 trim t3 turbo, drag log manifold, 2.5" downpipe, tial 38mm wastegate, turbo smart bov,450 dsms....

I was running 9psi and it decided to go, now im planning on buying a jdm motor and keeping it stock and boosting it, the b16a is $950 and the b18b is $850... now for the b16 I have CTR cams and a skunk2 manifold, and if i went for the ls it would be pretty much bone stock.

This is my daily driver and plan on running 9-10psi, I was leaning toward the b16 because ive always had vtec motors, gsr and 2 b20vtecs , but after reading alot and researching the LS-T thread im kinda thinking on buying the LS. B16s have no tq ....

So please help me decide which to choose...

When u buy the b16, u have the ability to go LS vtec, and torque isnt always the best on the street.

The fastest street hondas Ive seen/raced have been B16T b/c they hook.

If ur head is good on ur old B16, then i would buy a LS shortblock for cheap and do it like that.

I'd rather have a larger displacement motor that will spool the turbo quicker for traction on the street. That way you can modulate the throttle while in boost and maintain traction, whereas with a large turbo on a B16 it's much easier to fall completely out of boost, and boost comes on much more abruptly with the smaller motor. Don't believe everything you read on importbuilders

also make sure you factor in reliabilitly....

the old b16 head is just old and has so many miles on it and the lma's are shot, and im not sure if its still good...

and like I said I wanted to keep it pretty much stock and didnt want to mess with lsvtec

Rebuild the head and throw a stock LS shortblock under it with a GE ls/vtec kit

...and you have more authority and knowledge on the subject than Jeff?

Don't use an oversized turbo. Use a properly sized turbo, like everyone else in the world does. Maybe a 2871RS. That's enough turbo to make a low to mid 11 sec car out of just about any 2500lb or less Honda in a B16. No need puttin a 62-1 on a B16 just so you can have a highway racer that makes an amazing 2k RPM powerband.

Traction is always an issue. And since I've seen NA cars blowing the tires off the wheels, then I think it's safe to say a 250+ft/lb turbo setup will eat the street tires up from a dig anyways. And the modulating thing, yeah, that's nice and all...but you'll still get left behind a B16T (if the motor is setup for a fat powerband and not a crap ton of torque) if you partial throttle ever in a race against one. You can't expect your car to be as fast as it should be under partial throttle through the first 2 gears. It ain't gonna happen. You need to be able to stomp it, spin for a very brief second, and then be gone...otherwise you'll be playing catch up to the cars that aren't spinning through 3rd.

well, I would stick with a B16, but not because of traction or high rpm's or whatever. Since you did say street car, I would consider the hassle and reliability. That's far more important for a street car than making another 75ft/lbs torque. Just use a smaller turbo that can push 300-350whp in it's greatest efficiency range. That will give you a better tq/hp ratio.

On the other hand, an LS block will make for an easier drive on the streets as long as you keep your toe out of the carbuerator, since they will typically have like 200ft/250hp ratio.

Regardless, at low boost, depending on your gear ratio ( I assume 4.40 final drive), the B16 will be a bit faster I think, as far as stand still runs, but during passing in everyday traffic the LS might be better.

Better yet, just call a few reputable tuners and ask them what's the best setup on the street based on your choices.
