Internal vs. External Wastegate

Re: Internal vs. External Wastegate (OnPointDX)

internals tend to fail more and can stick easier (bad). they also can't handle the max. boost levels well, thus fluctuating with boost creep and spikes. externals are the way to go, imo. I'm gonna be converting my T3 to external w.g.

I'm kinda new to turbo setups. but from my observations, external wastegates smell like hell. My tial wastegate dumps out right in the engine bay and the fumes travel into the cabin. it's not that bad up to the point that your fmu setup dumps too much fuel into the system. this can be remedied by adding extra piping to the waste gate tube. but i hear it takes away from performance?? Not sure why.

Greddy turbo kits come with internal wastegates, and as far as i hear, they run fine. No fumes in the cabin, and no lack of performance either imo. Hope this helps. pleas no flaming if i posted some wrong info. just offering my 2 cents

Wastegate tubing should be a min of 18 inches long... according to Mr. Corky Bell https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif (I just bought his book). Personally I'd duct it back so it dumps under the car.

Re: Internal vs. External Wastegate (notsure)

You use a different flange for your downpipe that blocks off the internal wastegate hole. However you'll have to either modify or buy another manifold so you'll have a spot for the external wastegate.
