Which Intercooler is better:Air2Air/Air2Water/Icebox/Straight up Methanol for Str8 Racing?
Please people I want to hear opinions. I am going with the Icebox method. Air to air intercooler sheet metal/aluminum welded around teh intercooler etc....

I think the air to water would be the most effective. The icebox is a good idea, but it seems like the water at the front of the intercooler would get hot quicker since the water isn't circulating. The heat from the air is transferred to the water and with a water to air, the pump will pump more cold water into it. The water to air is also more space effecient. Both, however, will work well.

Just wanted to add to that, we run water to air and methanol!

Was thinking you can always drain the icebox out after every run. have plug on the bottom. Icebox wiht methanol would be nice

Yeah, of course you would have to drain it, but the inlet on the ic is going to get the hottest air and therfore melt the ice quicker. We have a 3 gallon reservoir and with it full of ice before the run, there is none left after. And this is with the water circulating! 350 degree air melts ice fast

So I am better of with a air to liquid intercooler. But isn't tru you don't need a intercooler if your running methanol. IT wouldn't hurt ice box and methanol. You know how hard it is to sell a air to air intercooler which is bigger then a type 24. Chris got one custom made for mine since we were planning on building a street car now its turning out to be a race car.

The way I see a water to air in a street car liek daily driven is. Like not even having a air-air intercooler. Just running a pipe from intake manifold into turbo. But when you are at the track you will be ready to rock and roll. OR stop by 7-11 and dump ice before u race someone in the streets.

i dont have any experince w/turbos and intercoolers yet so ill need some info. does the water heat up quick? is that the prob? if you had a water to air and didn't have any water in it, would it work like an air-to-air?

Water to air with no water is like no intercooler because the fins that the air runs through to cool the air are blocked off for the water. You can put a heat exchanger on it for a street car (like a small radiator) but it still won't even be as effective as a good air/air. And yes, you can run methanol without and intercooler, but it's just a little safer with and makes a little more power.

Anthony,
So after one low 9/sub 9 sec run, Kenny's car heats the water up to ambeint? or is is still cool?
I am thinking of using one of these for street/track use.
Thanks

With the water to air and after 9 sec run the water is still cool not abient but rather cool. IT usually around 50-60 degrees.

Thanks Viren. Im really thinking about the stealth aspect, plus all the other benefits of liquid-2-air. Im looking at getting that snail we were talking about. In about a month or so.
