Inspection time (Japanese Shaken)
In Japan, cars are required to go through rigorous inspection every two years. The inspection is called "Sha-ken", or directly translated "car inspection.
In the past, when the Japanese economy was booming, rather than going the pain of having to pay $1000-$1500 on inspection plus any taxes on the car, people use to just sell their cars after the first 2 to 3 years to get a new one. Nowadays, with the economy not as good as it was during the 80's, people tend to keep their cars longer.
This was my 2nd shaken with my R. With he turbo o the car, I definately was not looking forward to it. Japanese inspection laws a very strict, much stricter than the California emission standards. Not only do they inspect the emissions, but the whole entire car's health....interior and exterior. And if it doesn't pass, it cannot be insured. And if it cannot be insured, it cannot be driven.
My first shaken with my R was 3 years ago. The car was nearly stock and had less than 10k miles on it, so I figured it would pass with flying colors. Not the case...AT ALL. I took it to Autobacs to have them do the peliminary test ( to see if it would pass the actual inspection) then take it to the final test. When I got my car back, it looked completely different! They had taken off the wing. They said it was illegal (although it was stock) , they had made a bunch of repairs that they said needed to be done to pass the tests. This is a car that had been babied since day one, and I had taken it to ALL scheduled dealer maintenances. By the end of the sha-ken. I had paid nearly $1300 for the testing and repairs...VERY pissed. And the didn't even put my wing back on for me. And the city light bulbs were white instead of blue
This year was the second sha-ken. My car is no longer stock (far from it) Countless number of mods - the F-MAX turbo kit being the most obvious. And even an amateur who knows nothing about cars could tell that the engine had been modified.
I decided not to got to Autobacs this year, because of what those ******** did to my car the last time. I took it to a small shop 3 blocks fom my house. They did the peliminary test with me right there. When the started my car, they were kind of suprised at the exhaust note. "The exhaust is pretty loud...it has to be below 93 decibles at 4500rpms. You might want to consider a silencer for that"....but I remember readind\g that the N-1 exhaust is legal on an NA car and even more quieter on a turbo car. So I took the risk and skipped buying a silencer.
I was expecting a huge list of all the parts I either had to remove or replace to pass the test. SUPRISINGLY, it turn out to be two parts...my citylights (blue is illegal) everything else passed the peliminary EVEN the turbo kit.
But I wasn't out of the woods yet.... They took the R to the testing area the next day, and tested EVERYTHING. The looked for things like whether or not the shift pattern on the shift **** was correct (or existed at all)...whether or not you can clearly see the instrument cluster through the steering wheel....decible test...windows rolled down...all doors opened...exhaust leaks...fluid leaks....brakes, lights...whether or not the car is too low or too high...tire pressure and tread wear....EVERYTHING!!!!
It took 5 hours....I was expecting either a HUGE bill or a failure notices because the car was pumping out too much poisonous gases or because it was too loud.
I passed with flying colors!! And it cost me $400 less than the first time!! only $800. So I am pretty happy...crazy system...leaave a car stock and get busted...modify the begeebees out of it and pass! Go figure..thats J-town for ya!

in Michigan, it can even be missing a wheel My father lost a wheel bearing on his old jeep, the wheel busted off. He picked up the wheel, put it in the back, popped it in 4wd, and 3-wheeled home. No joke!

We need to start a redneck games or something and see what kind of **** they will produce when they are given a little amount of material to work with. It would be interesting.

The great thing about having "Y" plates is the Shaken process is simple as lonmg as you do a thorough precheck before running the car through the line yourself. I changed my title to a 2 seater because of the "jungle gym" and I got the minium height changed to 10cm of clearance.
