i'm making a downpipe but need some advise
Hi, i making a 3inch downpipe for my car but i have a 5bolt flange.
I can just weld the 3inch to the flange. And only use 4 bolts. Or, i can use a transition that go's from 2,5inch to 3inch. What should i do? Are there any other options
thanks Jose

But that means that i can only use 4 bolts from the 5 bolts. Isn't this a problem??

transition is *always* better then a straight step up if you can fit it... If you go with a straigt step you get all sorts of nasty turbulence and its just not pretty.
burns stainless has really nice transitions.

Re: (pete98m3)
ok, i didn't tought of it that way. What i like about the transition is that i still can use all 5 bolts. So i won't have any leaks for sure. So this would be the best way??

which side is your compressor on? if its on the drivers side, you could just run a straing pipe out for a few inches then do the downward bend.

you could always put a 1-2" strait peice right off of the turbo so that it will clear the bolt, and stick a stud out of the turbo and put a nut on that one.
a 1" extension would be a pain to weld up, but would solve your problem

Re: (Snail Tuning)
would it be possible to go ahead and put the bolt through the flange, then weld the DP to the flange? Then you could use a box wrench maybe to tighten it down?

get a v-band and go 3" all the way... you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 bolts is 80%, ****, thats like a B- or C+, thats passing to me!
In all seriousness, a lot of the guys welding these DP's and manifolds are making them and you can only use 4 bolts out of 5, its no big deal. If you are really worried about it like people have said, just buy a transition from somewhere but its really not necessary.

Don't use 4 out of 5 bolts, it will leak without a doubt.
I made a 3" pipe with a 5 bolt flange. I used a stud in the turbo in place of the bottom bolt, and just used a Honda 8mm nut, it fits just barely, you have to install the nut as you are installing the pipe, then tighten the nut as you are bringing the pipe closer to the turbo. If you just put the pipe on first, there would be no room for the nut to be put on the stud. It's a bitch but it works.

I used a 2.5"->3" adapter from Canadian Tire and chopped it down to literally half an inch long or less. That was welded onto the flange so all the bolts can be used and then a 3" pipe was welded on that.
It can't be THAT bad, the flange outlet is 2.5" anyway, basically it extends the outlet by 4" or so, who cares?
It obviously made some good power for me, check sig at 8 lbs boost!
