Default If I Mount A Turbo Upside Down, What's The Worst That Could Happen?

I've got a junkyard Mitsubishi TE04H, there's no way to swap the compressor and exhaust sides. I'm having a real problem getting it where I want it on my A1 - my solution was to mount it "upside down", that is with the oil supply becoming the oil drain, and vice versa .
The center cartridge just needs oil, right? Does anyone see any problems with this?

you burn up the turbo. the oil has to be able to drain out of the bottom back into the pan. or else you will ruin the turbo by cooking the bearings.

will NOT work, the feed side goes directly in the bearing journals, and the drain side is low pressure oil coming out of the bearing.. you can not reverse it.. its there for a reason

why not clock both sides 180° ?

I'm assuming he meant to say TD04H, not TE04H...if so, I have clocked a compressor housing personally, you just have to carefully file yourself a new groove for the pin..On the exhaust side, you'll need to drill a little tiny hole for the housings pin, or you could break it off, but that seems like a horrible idea.

I thought all turbos were clockable?

Some are just more of a pain than others.

My compressor has a huge snap ring instead of bolts... I can't find big enough snap ring pliers to rotate it I'll just keep looking.

The snap ring is holding the housing on, but that's not what is keeping it from rotating. It's not worth trying to explain, if you take it apart it's obvious, there's a little pin thing.

If you can't clock it then you can't use it, bottom line.

Use some PB blaster on it to loosen the rust a bit and see if you can tap that sucker with a hammer. It just needs a little encouragement.

Aren't turbos with internal wastegates very limited with how much you can clock them? And, why do you need to swap the compressor and turbine sides?

If you have an internal wastegate you just have to drill and tap the compressor housing for the new wastegate position.

Just clock the turbo how you need it, then mark the holes and mount the wastegate actuator.

I just used the original mounting holes and built a little bracket, easier than having to tap the housing IMHO. Either way, it's not a hard thing to do!

Really? How did you do this? I would rather build a bracket but I didn't think there was a way??

Do you have any pics or a description of how you did it? Materials used etc??

Sorry this is OT but I'm interested!

I just clocked the compressor housing so that the outlet was pointing down. At that point my mounting holes were like 180° off.. I just made a bracket to relocate the holes..nothing special. I can try to get a picture but I'm not sure how easy it will be to see on the car.

It's clocking the housing I'd worry about. You have to file a groove into the center section, flush with the gasket, without tearing the gasket, but without getting metal anywhere, I put a piece of tape over the gasket and ground down to it..HTH

Why would you need to file a groove in the center housing????

Your right about the gasket part, be extremely careful not to tear the carbon seal.

and how are you doing this with the turbo in the car already?? don't try to take the short cut man cause it will come back and hurt ca.

Some of the DSM turbo's have a little "tab" that stop's you from clocking it.

This is what he was refering to filing down.

Thanks Dax, I'm glad someone is following. I'm not taking any shortcuts, I was referring to the tab "that stops you from clocking" It doesn't stop you, you just need to make a new hole for it, which is what I was talking about. If you don't have a mitsu turbo, don't worry about it.

What I was talking about doing was taking a picture, not filing anything down.
