I finally have a reason to post here! Can you Turbo junkies take a loook?
Hi, I am in the process of buying parts for a HMT setup for my d16z6.
I have some pics of the manifold, turbo and intercooler I'm getting, and wandering what you all think. Thanks for the time.\
This is what I was told about the parts, Plus I saw lots of pics.
"" The turbo is an polished IHI RHB5 a ford probe. The turbo doesnt have any shaft play at all, it is a super nice turbo that will last a long time. The turbo is small so it will have quick spoil, full boost by 2000 rpm. Im not sure what boost is set at but the wastegate should be set at about 6 psi. Using a boost controller can easily raise the boost.
The manifold and downpipe is ceramic coated, the downpipe measures 2.25" and is mandrel bent. It has a seperate pipe for the wastegate to give it better flow in turn more HP. I have build many of these types of manifold for other cars and have not seen any cracking. The manifold is very durable..
The intercooler is custom made, core size measures 22" long x 2" wide x 4.5" tall. The diameter of the pipe is 2", it measures endtank to endtank 25", and 29" long overall. I pressured tested it to 35 psi with no leaks.
I ran it on my car with just the oil lines hooked up to see if it was working fine. I idled and rev'ed it up and the turbo spoiled really fast and nice, there are no signs of any oil leaks within the turbo because the exhaust did not smoke at all. This would be a great turbo for quick spoil daily driving, low boost on stock motor. ""

Its a bone stock motor with 198k on it. Going to run low boost, maybe 9 or 10. Then slowly upgrade internals, or just use that till this engine goes. But Family owns a shop, so Its got great upkeep. Not a problem in its history at all.

Yes, from a probe. I researched on Hmt.com and decided that it'd be a good one for me. This will be a stealth project basically. I can't wait to get my goddamn camera back, then I'll take some pics. Its a 4 door EX. Was just painted and I debadged the whole car except for one "H" on the trunk. All stock, I don't do altezza's or anything. Only thing I did was Sidemarkers. That was back in the day. I'll be painting the intercooler to hide it also.

Seems to be a great deal that is you did get it all at a resonable price. I wouldnt mind building another car but set like a 1500$ maxium on money spent and see what the best junkyard setup you can do.

you got a pretty good deal on everything, its just that 2.25 is too small, you want more flow

What do you recommend I do about the 2.25? Would it work for the time being? This isnt a race car. (I wouldnt mind it to be ) , but seriously, its my daily driver, just giviing the z6 a bit more pep.

I realise that it will be a bit before I collect everything thats needed. I have the electronics to buy now and some other things.
I have a question on the DP. Is it something that is welded on ? Or can I just use the 2.25 for the time being. (Budget) Then get a 2.5 after I've got the whole thing actually on the car and working?

Yeah, I don't know about that ghetto fab philosophy. My setup is coming along and it's pretty cheap too.
-SC50 turbo - $550
-Rev Hard Mani - $250
-Tial BOV - $150
-Tial Wastegate - $150
-450hp capable intercooler - $250
-Oil connections - $50
I spent $1400 for a 450hp setup. You can probably get brand new name brand stuff for the power levels you want and only spend $500 - just be patient and live on ebay like I do.

^i agree^
That turbo might spool up at 2000rpm but top-end is gonna be kind of a disapointment.... especially on a z6. you'll be burning tires... thats for sure!

Yeah, kind of. Not really.
What I do is bid on engines/kits/compound parts listings on ebay. I keep what I want, then re-sell the listing for what I bought it for. Check out the following list -
-Skunk2 valve springs
-Skunk2 retainers
-Crower billet rods
-ACT prolite flywheel
-Clutch specialties clutch (unknown capacity )
-Skunk2 adjustable cam gear
I got all that crap for about $400 using the method outlined above. Although I admit I spent about $1k for a very complicated uberdata setup.
Anyway, this thead's not about me. I'll make a "build thread" when the new setup is done. Back to the original poster - my car currently has a jackson supercharger on it. The thing is gay - why would anyone want low end instead of high end. All I do is spin my tires down low and have no power up high. Trust me, you don't want low end on a Honda. That's why I bought the turbo. I can't wait to replace the gay supercharger.

Thanks for all the advice. Helps alot. And no, I'm not really looking for a 450 hp setup. Is it possible to use an electronic device such as a boost controller, or vafc, or some ecu management and change the rpm time that the turbo reaches its max psi?

Lol, a vafc = vtec-air-fuel-controller. It only deals with air/fuel ratios and vtec crossover.
The answer is no. Boost controllers only set the psi at which the wastegate opens. There are engine management systems that let you set different boost levels depending on gear/speed, but nothing determines how fast the turbo spools except for the actual turbo. Well, and manifold type. And compression.
