hpw1707's LS/VTEC quest for 450-500whp "street monster"- turbo education required.

Im building a Ls Vtec (b18b with b16 head ) looking for 450-550 hp
compression 9:1
81.5mm bore
skunk 2 pro 1 cams
93pump gas
Turbo 's I been looking at holest hx40 or borg warner with A/R 0.83 turbine
If any turbo you think that will work better lmk

Thats a 1000 hp turbo mate :)
What manifold do you have if you allready have.
And what's the budget for the turbocharger.

Whats the budget for the turbo. Thats cruicial because prices range from 600 to 1500++
And top mount will hurt spool up , for that horsepower is kinda overkill but you can allways go for a little bit smaller turbo to counter that...

around $800 what turbo you suggest should go with that up spools fast and that can meet 450-550hp on 93pump gas

If you decide divided setup, 177272 6068 is very cheap but youll need 2 wastegates.
On ANY turbo 550 the tyre is difficult on pump gas. But thats just me.
The turbonetics wont do 550 to the tyre but WILL spool faster .Probably close to 450whp max
Also the s257 sxe you can get the T3 .70 a/r from bullseye for better top end.

My 5457 in my gsr was a hell of a street car w 410whp @ 15psi. Pump gas is going to be your issue. Once over 500 you better be ready to upgrade ignition and fuel system.

You think going with that borg warner would be better on the top end and not bad for spool time . what you would go with

Look my man. 450 to 550 is a very different target.I can undestand you cant be sure because target is difficult.
Id say Get GT3540S at t3 .63 housing and IF you want more later you can loose some spool and get some 50-70whp more power by going for a .82 housing.Thats the safer bet. Ive seen 500whp with a gt35 on .63 but that was almost maxed.
It was ok on spool toO and that was on a 84mm B16 that most of the times suck at spooling big turbos.
At least down the line you still have the option to go bigger with small cost.
A good middle ground is s257 sxe with a bullseye t3 .70 a/r housing. its like a GTX3576.It will not hit 550 wheel hp on pump gas and i believe you must go very big to hit that power
on 93 octane. s257 sxe depending on dyno in .70 a/r will hit around 480-500 to the wheels . But thats it. You cant go bigger after that since the turbine housing is allready big.

as a reference point on a 1800 twin cam, a holset hx40/35 with a 12cm twin scroll housing which is a 6060 if you were comparing to precision will hit 25psi of boost at 5200rpm, it will make 500whp on a mustang dyno, we think it will max at around 580whp mustang but havent pushed it that hard yet.

This is on pump fuel, no e85

So firstly your decision depends on whether its a realistic mustang style dyno or a happy dynojet, if its on a dynojet you could probably get away with a full hx35, remember though the guys maxing these turbos out on pump fuel are low compression and running 30psi+ at MBT, you cannot always guarantee thats going to be possible on 9:1

The HX40 you linked to is a 67mm version and way too big for your goals. As Balor stated a 450whp turbo and 550 whp turbo behave quite differently so you need to decide where you ultimately going with the car and setup. Also factor in that if you staying on 93 oct and targeting 500whp plus you will need a turbo that does 60 lb/min of flow minimum with a turbine size to support.

A high-flow HX35 will make 500whp but be stretched to do so especially on 93. A Super HX40 will make 500+whp easily. I ran a Super HX40 on my 84x89 LS/VTEC and made ~570whp @ 25 psi on E85 with restrictive "turbo" cams. With Pro 1's like you running my setup would've made 620whp+ but again on E85.

The key to getting a Holset turbo to work optimally is two-fold - 1) use the correct spec (truck versions are usually mismatched) and 2) manifold design is key.

PM me, I might be able to assist with something. I've supplied Holsets to many customers across a wide range of platforms (including a 7-second BMW) so have a fair bit of experience with them.

The other larger alternative to the S257 SX-E is a cast Borg Warner S360 which Full-Race is selling dirt cheap but will need a T4 divided flange.
