Default HowTo: DIY Exhaust Coating

I see so many uncoated turbo manifolds here that I thought I'd cross-post this here:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1608324

It made a huge difference in my under-hood temps back when I was running a Lovefab SST manifold. I could comfortably hold my hand .5" away from the runners after a few 380 WHP dyno runs, not something that I could do on the manifold before I coated it. This would probably be good for turbine housings too.

You can buy a media blaster attachment for your compressor. You can get one at Harbor Freight for about $10, just like the sprayer. You just fill it with sand (various types available) and you're ready to sandblast.

Nice write-up

not having a sandblaster is no excuse.. post a message on a local forum and I bet there are 10 people who could sandblast something for you.

That's probably true, I asked around locally and found a guy who did mine for no charge. I volunteered to coat some stuff for him if he needed any exhausts coated.

Anything will work, but the better the surface prep, the better and more durable the coating will be.

any reason other than looks to do this instead of using exhaust wrap? I planned on using an exhaust wrap and/or DEI high temp coating.

moisture can get inbetween the wrap and the manifold, causing the manifold to weaken, and crack.

Kick *** write up!

This is exactly what i've been looking for to protect my pricey mild steel DP i just got from spoolin performance

Any recommendations on what grit sandpaper to use? I don't have access to a sandblaster either. Think it makes that big a difference whether its sandblasted or sandpapered?

Also, will this work on cast iron? I got a blox manifold. If i was doing the mani i would find a way to get it sandblasted...

only problem is you won't be able to sand down every little knook and cranny.

can you bring it to a shop and have them sandblast it for you?

Maybe. I have no idea where to go even.

This is just a downpipe. not a hell of a lot of nooks and crannies really.

Like I said, you can do it any way you want, but surface prep made all the difference in the world for me on how it turned out. I won't do anything else without sandblasting, but you can try it and see what happens. In Raleigh I found a number of places that do sandblasting, if you call some local machine shops they will either do it themselves or know somebody who does. One place charged $60/hour and said it wouldn't take them an hour to do it. For stuff that isn't rusted, it should be pretty cheap because they are just roughing up the surface. You can also put your city name and "sandblasting" in Google, or search an online yellow page listing:

Header wrap is supposedly (I say supposedly because I've never wrapped a manifold, this is just stuff that I've read about) tougher on the metal because it traps heat between the wrap and the metal. Thermal coatings don't do that, they just don't let as much heat radiate off of the surface, making more of the heat go out the exhaust. The heat that does make it to the surface is free to radiate away, as opposed to getting trapped and excessively heating up the metal (metal under thermal wrap routinely gets red hot and stays that way). The excessive heat prematurely fatigues the metal, making your exhaust last nowhere near as long as if it was coated.
