How to tune off a/f gauge and VAFC?
Alright, here's what im planning on doing. Taking a 3rd gear pull on the HWY with my POS *cough* autometer A/F gauge and then make adjustments on the A/F gauge accodingly.
Most likely close to WOT because the gauge sucks, but i need some rough tuning before i get my wideband. Innovative
I do this at WOT correct? or would part-throttle be better?
Any help's appreciated. Thank you
Also, I was thinking a "tuning" forum might be beneficial. It may help organize stuff. But im not the one doin it so ill keep quiet

no WOT isnt accurate at all...the only time is partially close is at steady crusing and low rpms...once you are at wot it cant take readings fast enough to come up with an accurate a/f...do NOT tune based on that $30 guage

well you shouldnt really drive the car hard till its tuned...way to many people blow engines doing that....whats your setup as it sits as far and your turbo, and fuel

Me and my friend tuned my turbo d-series with a volt meter from walmart using 3rd and 4th gear wot.....from like 2500rpms to redline, we made the o2 readings around .92 .94.....when it was dyno time we were surprised to see how accurate it was...we were almost dead nuts accurate, we had to make one small change at 4500 rpms and it was good....put down 205whp at 6psi d16 using afc hack, we still use it to re-tune all the time, found it works well.....better than payin 100 bucks every week to dyno

I use a dynotune volt meter.. works just like any a/f gauge except instead just of saying rich or lean it gives the number of volts travelling through the o2 sensor...and based on the volts travelling through it gives the estimated a/f ratio....
ive tuned with personal experience with this and safc with my jrsc and i must say it worked fairly well.............a wideband with data logning would work much better.. but this definatly works good enough to where u can prevent blowing ur motor at relativly low boost.... 6-12psi.....
costs on average of $70

when u tune by volts what does full rich give you??? i get .000 volts when the car is running too rich is that normal???

yeah same idea as this guy except mine is just an actual thing made for it... but im sure it works the same............... i tune to about .900-.940 volts which about 13.2/1 and lower

chances are its not hooked up properly.. because the higher the volt's the mroe rich ur running.... say u are over 1.000 volt.....that would be pretty damn rich.. Around 12.5/1 a/f and lower..
if its readin .000 at idle or .0xx then dont really worry about it.... but if its doing that at wide open throttle then something is wrong with the way u hooked it up...

a narrow band o2 (stock) can't tell the difference between 11.5:1 and 13:1 A/F. You <u>can't</u> accurately tune with it. All it really reads is around 14.7:1 A/F. Shell out $50 or so bux and make a couple dyno passes with the wideband.

Exactly... Look at the difference in the response curves of an OEM Honda O2 sensor and an FJO kit w/ an NTK sensor. Sure that voltmeter will be spitting out numbers, but they won't mean anything except below, at, or above stoichiometry. Off a narrowband sensor you have like a .2V change from 10:1-14.7:1. The FJO has almost 10x as much detail within the same range. You are asking for trouble if you tune off a narrowband O2 sensor. There is a big difference being at 11.5:1 and being at 14.5:1 under boost

there is no question as to how much better a wideband is....... cause it is....a lot better......but not everyone is in it for the same goals.... and it really matters on what ur needs are for the project......... mine was safty at decent boost and i got it with the 02 volt meter........

Also, what's the accuracy on that voltmeter they tested? I'd like to know the tolerance.....

you might be able to get away with ghetto tuning with a volt meter like some mentioned above have...but is it really worth blowing your motor over trying

I don't know anything about the Innovative one, the AEM WB02 kit is just that, a wideband O2 sensor and controller. You can have it output 0-1V to work in conjunction with a stock ECU or 0-5V for greater detail with a standalone or voltmeter or whatever. Whatever you do, plan ahead, it sucks to replace parts because you outgrow them.

I know this is a dumb question, but what voltage would I be looking to tune to if I tried this, and does it change based on the RPM or boost? This is based on a stock 0-1V O2 sensor.
