how to tell if a turbo is good or bad
Hey, guys! I'm pretty new to owning turbos, and I have a chance to get a Garrett m24 for a real good deal, and the guy is letting me hold on to it for a bit to check it out.. I was wondering what the best way to tell if it is good or not.(working order). the spindle and blades seem to spin freely, but thats about all i know.
so far, this is what I know about it:
Garrett M24
.48 air
.49 exhaust
external wastegate(i think)
Oil suspended bearing
water cooled
here are some pictures of it:
thanks to everyone in advance!

Re: how to tell if a turbo is good or bad
i was thinking of swapping a DOHC head onto my a6 block. or saving it for when i build a b series motor..
to check for shaft play, do I just wiggle the shaft side to side?
edit: i know im new, but shouldnt there be shaft play if its an oil bearing turbo? or should it not move at all?

Sup,
1. Your turbo is internal wastegated (see the actuator arm)
2. The water cooling line should of been blocked if not in use to avoid foreign material in the cooling jacket
3. Turbo has had age (obviously lol)
4. To check for shaft play: Axial (side to side) check for freeplay/loose shaft: Radial (up and down) check for freeplay/ wear mark or scaring on the housing caused by the turbine/compressor fins.
New turbo have no axial shaft play, but they do have a very slight radial shaft play.

That site only deals with the GT series, and doesn't show ALL of the garrett line, especially those that were from OEM applications like yours looks to be. The turbo looks a bit worn, and some oil seems to be blowing by the oil sealing ring, but is usable depending upon the engine application.

Re: how to tell if a turbo is good or bad
looks like that turbo was burnign a bit of oil check the seals. also shaft play shoudl be very minor but side to side and in and out a small amount is normal for a used turbo but the tighter the better and checl the exhaust housing for cracks and both wheels for chips and look at the housings for rub marks liek the wheel hit them. just a few ideas. also that turbo is gonna be good for not much more than 220horses at the most.
